Bucs Finally Sign a Free Agent

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the most cap money available (approximately $61-Mil.) but have yet to make a huge splash in free agency, they traded for TE Kellen Winslow, but missed out on DT Albert Haynesworth and LB Jonathan Vilma.

The Buccaneers have finally signed a free agent, but it is not likely to get the fans excited. The Bucs have brought back 2008 special teams captain S Will Allen re-signing the veteran backup to a one-year contract that will pay about $1.83-Million but has a maximum value of $2.35-Million.

There may be hope for Bucs fans on the free agent front as DT Colin Cole is said to be close to signing with the team and WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh is visiting Tampa on Sunday.

Hangartner is going to Hang Out in Western New York

The Buffalo Bills have filled a huge hole in the offensive line by signing G/C Geoff Hangartner, who jokingly said he was "6-8, 420 pounds", although a more modest 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Hangartner will fill the hole left at center for the Bills who recently released Duke Preston and his back-up Melvin Fowler.

After four-seasons in Carolina, Hangartner signs on in Buffalo to a multi-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Hangartner, a fith round choice in 2005, brings experience to a re-building Buffalo offensive line with his 27 starts in 54 games played

Rocky Bernard Signs with G-Men

New York Giants continue to bolster their defense through free agency today by adding DT Rock Bernard, just a few hours after adding LB Michael Boley. Terms of the contract were no revealed.

Bernard, who turns 30 in April, is a pass rushing threat up the middle and in his 7 seasons in Seattle he has racked up 29 career sacks.

The Giants must have a great pitch man because they are 2-for-2 on free agent recruiting trips so far. The team is hosting another defensive lineman Chris Canty from division rivals the Dallas Cowboys, and as the chances of signing Canty after inking Bernard may appear slim, the Giants proved in their Super Bowl run, you can never have too many good D-lineman.

Dallas Steals Brooking Away from the Peachtree State

Keith Brooking has played his entire career in the state of Georgia, from East Coweta High School on to Georgia Tech and the the Atlanta Falcons. The Dallas Cowboys changed that today when they signed Brooking to a three-year contract. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Brookings, 33, has recorded 1,132 tackles and 17 sacks in his tenure with the Falcons. The 11-year veteran was named to five Pro Bowl squads , and was selected as an All-Pro in two seasons.

Cutler "Liked Playing" in Denver, Could Still be Traded

Earlier in the day it was reported that Denver QB Jay Cutler, who is fresh off his first pro-bowl appearance, was linked to at least two teams who were interested in trading for Cutler in exchange for QB Matt Cassel, in a 3-way trade involving the Patriots, the Broncos and another team (Tampa Bay and Detroit were named). The trade would have allowed Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels to re-unite with Cassel whom he worked with in New England last season.

The 3-way trade fell through as the Kansas City Chiefs landed Cassel, and LB Mike Vrabel, for a 2nd round pick (34th overall), but Jay Cutler is upset by the news and feels he is no longer wanted in Denver.

Tampa Bay is said to have initially rocked the boat in the Mile High City by contacting Denver about the trade, but Denver was listening, enough so to delay the Matt Cassel trade for a short while.

"My understanding at this point is they're trying to trade me," Cutler said this afternoon. "We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity."

It should be noted that Cutler spoke in the past tense about the Denver Broncos "I Liked it here" so you have to wonder if Cutler has been told he is in fact on the Block, something the team has denied.

"He's not the only person in the last few days we've received calls on," McDaniels said. "We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."

Nevertheless, Cutler was shaken his team entertained moving him, and doesn't believe such a possibility is dead.

"I'm upset. I mean I'm really shocked at this point," he said. "I could see why they want Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. I just don't get it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."

Lions Cowboys Swap Players

The Dallas Cowboys have traded CB Anthony Henry to the Detroit Lions for QB Jon Kitna.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew, meanwhile, has been trying for weeks to trade Kitna, who started 36 consecutive games for the team before going on injured reserve last October. Kitna became expendable after the Lions signed veteran QB Daunte Culpepper to a contract extension last month.

The Cowboys are in need of a veteran back-up to starter Tony Romo as they released QB Brad Johnson yesterday. Henry, 31, started 51 of 57 games the last four seasons with the Cowboys, and his six interceptions in 2007 tied for fifth-best in the league.

In Detroit Henry will join newly-acquired Eric King and roster holdovers Keith Smith and Travis Fisher as the cornerbacks under contract for next season.

Jones Leaves Tennessee for the Bay Area

The San Francisco 49ers have signed WR Brandon Jones to a five-year, $16.5 Million contract with $5.4 Million guaranteed.

The 49ers are desperate for receivers after WR Bryant Johnson signed in Detroit earlier today and WR Isaac Bruce's future is unknown as he contemplates retirement.

Jones is coming off his best season with Tennessee, which is where he played his first four NFL seasons, he caught a career-high 41 passes for 449 yards and one touchdown while starting seven of 16 games.

Texans Sign Antonio Smith

The Texans have signed Arizona defensive lineman Antonio Smith. According to Smith's agent Drew Rosenhaus he signed a five-year contract worth $35 Million contract and $12.5 Million is guaranteed.

Smith, 27, spent his first five seasons with Arizona and started for the Cardinals in their Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished the regular season with 41 tackles and 3.5 sacks

Arriving in Houston on Friday night, Smith spent Saturday meeting with Texans coach Gary Kubiak and his assistants while general manager Rick Smith negotiated with Rosenhaus.

Information on the Cassel Mystery Teams

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that Tampa Bay and Detroit along with Denver were in the mix of the mystery teams trying to get in on the Matt Cassel Trade.

Tampa approached Denver to try to make a three-way trade that would have sent Cassel to the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler to the Buccaneers. The Broncos entertained the notion and pondered it but ultimately decided against it.

Also, the Lions approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler, trying to dangle Cassel as bait. Once again, Denver debated the deal and opted against it apparently. What made it a moot point was that while all Tampa, Detroit and Denver engaged in trade talks with New England, the Patriots went ahead and dealt Cassel to the Chiefs.

The Broncos are denying their interest in trading Cutler, but the connection between new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, who was Matt Cassel's OC in New England adds credibility and makes sense as Cassel would fit the offensive strategy of McDaniels. But, as of Saturday afternoon, Cutler was angry to hear that his name had been floated in any trade conversations.

In the end the Chiefs have stolen Cassel away from New England for low compensation, the Broncos still have Cutler and the Lions and Buccaneers continue their search for quarterbacks of the future. Stay tuned as things may be heating up in Tampa and Detroit.

Lions Add 2, Including a Former 1st Round WR

Detroit Lions have added two new players two their roster, one of them a fomer first round receiver, Bryant Johnson and CB Eric King

Bryant Johnson, 27, a first round selection of the Arizona Cardinals in 2003, signed a 3-year deal worth $9 Million. Johnson was immediately overshadowed by 2nd round pick Anquan Boldin in their rookie year and dropped another spot on the depth chart when the team drafted Larry Fitzgerald in the 1st round in 2004. Last season Johnson played in San Francisco under a one-year contract and will now join his 3rd team in as many years.

King, 26,has signed a two-year contract with the team. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.
He has spent the past three seasons playing in Tennessee under then-defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the Lions' new head coach. At 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, King, who played his rookie season in Buffalo, was a role player as a backup cornerback and key special-teams contributor with the Titans, though his 2008 season ended in November with a broken forearm. He'll likely see an expanded role with the Lions.

Patriots Trade Cassel and Vrabel to Chiefs for 2nd Rounder

When many speculated that the Patriots were asking for either a first and third round pick or two second round picks for QB Matt Cassel it appears that all it took was a 2nd rounder to get the deal done.

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded the 34th overall pick to New England for QB Matt Cassell, not only for the QB but LB Mike Vrabel was tossed in as well.

“I have a long history with both players,” Chiefs' G.M. Scott Pioli said in a release. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

Mike Lombardi of NFL Network tried to reason that this was a value move by the Patriots and that the third overall pick would have commanded a larger salary than Matt Cassel's franchise tag number and therefore accepted the 34th as sufficient compensation, but I believe this may be more about how the Patriots feel about Cassell's one year wonder status, and how he will look when he is not throwing to receivers like Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

If you look at history of QB trades and value, Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was traded for a second-round pick. A.J. Feeley was traded for a second-round pick.

Belichick also praised Cassel: "It is very easy to root for guys like Matt Cassel, who do everything the right way and flourish as a result. As much as we would have loved to continue working with Matt, we wish him nothing but the best as he takes this next step forward in his career."

If the Patriots are so high on Cassell and were asking for either a first and third round pick or two second round picks for Cassell why just settle for one 2nd rounder, why not get a 2nd and a 3rd? Why throw Mike Vrabel into the deal? The move remains puzzling as the Patriots are down two players with the opportunity to replace only one.

Perhaps somebody lost the players in a game of poker, or it was just Bill Belichicks way of helping out a friend in Scott Pioli.

For all you draftniks out there expect the Patriots to draft a LB early to replace Vrabel

Skins Cut Springs

As expected the Washington Redskins released veteran CB Shawn Springs in an attempt to clear up some salary cap space after signing two monster contracts at the beginning of free agency.

Springs became expendable when the Redskins re-signed CB DeAngelo Hall to a six-year, $54 million deal earlier in the day.

Springs was on the final year of his contract and had a cap number of $8.48 million, but they'll actually save $6 million with the move. His base salary was $6 million and he had $2.48 million left in bonus proration.

Giants Add Boley

The New York Giants had a successful dinner yesterday with free agent LB Michael Boley, it was so successful that Boley decided to have all his dinners in New York from now on, as he and the Giants have decided on a five-year $25 Million contract with more than $10 Million guaranteed

Boley, 26, spent the past four years in Atlanta, he played in all 64 regular-season games for the Falcons, but he lost his starting job late last season. He's 6'3", 223 lbs and is particularly adept dropping into coverage.

This signing fills a need of the Giants at weakside line backer or "Will" backer, where the G-men had inconsistent play from the trio of Chase Blackburn, rookie Bryan Kehl and Gerris Wilkinson.
Boley will likely now move in as the permanent starter.

Broncos Add Another Free Agent

The Denver Broncos have signed DT Darrell Reid to a three-year $6.8 million contract.

Reid is the NFL-high sixth free agent to sign with Denver. The 6-foot-2, 288-pound Reid was a backup defensive lineman with the Colts during his first four NFL seasons. He also contributed on special teams and as a short-yardage fullback.

Reid was arrested on disorderly conduct and trespassing charges for allegedly refusing to leave the parking lot of an Indianapolis nightclub. The charges were later dropped.

Stacy Andrews to Eagles Update

Eagles' Right guard Shawn Andrew might see a familliar face lining up next to him next season in Philadelphia as the Eagles have signed Andrews' older brother RT Stacy Andrews. Head coach Andy Reid has also discussed the two swapping positions as both brothers can play either position.

The Eagles also hope having big brother around provide a stabilizing presence for his brother, who said he did not report to training camp last summer because he was suffering from depression.

The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

*UPDATE* Andrews has signed a 6-year deal with the Eagles, financial terms still unavailable.

An interesting tidbit of information the Andrews' brothers are only the third set of brothers to play on the same offensive line since 1951, joining Jay and Joel Hilgenberg of the 1993 Saints and Dave and Doug Widell of the Broncos circa 1990-92.

Dawkins Sings in Denver

After a season of Brian Dawkins publicly saying he wanted to return to Philly, and at a reduced rate when he admitted that his 'big contract' days were behind him. Well it took less than 24 hours on the free agent market to change Brian Dawkins mind.

Dawkins has signed with the Denver Broncos after spending his entire career in Philadelphia, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 13-year veteran will obviously bring a veteran presence to the Broncos defense but he will also bring a willing tackler in the run game and a safety who can get to the QB, evidenced by his 34 career sacks.

Eagles/Jets Working on a Trade for Lito Sheppard

The New York Jets are busy this off-season shaping their roster, they have already added LB Bart Scott and now res-signed RG Brandon Moore, now head coach Rex Ryan is looking to quickly add another piece top the NY Jets puzzle.

The Jets are in talks with the Philadelphia Eagles for a trade of CB Lito Sheppard. According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Jets will surrender a fifth-round pick in 2009 and a conditional draft pick in 2010, which can range from a second-round pick to a fifth-round pick.

Sheppard, 27, is a two-time pro bowler who became expendable when the Eagles aquired Assante Samuels last off-season and pushed Sheppard down the depth chart. The recent re-signing of CB Joselio Hanson seemed like the final push out the door, this trade confirms it.

In 2008, the seven-year veteran played in mostly nickle and dime situations and started just 3 games.

The Jets not only want Lito Sheppard to join the team as a starter on defense but also to become a mentor for young and promising corner back Darrelle Revis.
A 2002 1st-round pick of the Eagles has 253 career tackles, two sacks, 18 interceptions, and 54 passes defensed in 93 games with 53 starts.

49ers Bring Back familliar Faces

The San Francisco 49ers have brought three familliar faces back to the Bay area; as linebacker Takeo Spikes, fullback Moran Norris and return specialist Allen Rossum have all agreed to terms with the team.

Spikes, 33, was outspoken about his desire to return to San Francisco, and reportedly agreed to a two-year contract. Last season, Spikes started 13 games and was credited with 122 tackles.

"I feel like there is unfinished business," Spikes said a day after the season. "I never had any regret about any of the teams that I left. But I would have regret if I left this team. It's something I want to be a part of."

Norris, 30, was likely brought back to San Francisco as Head Coach Mike Singletary continues to put an emphasis on a power running game. The 6-foot-1, 250-pound blocking back helped pave the way for Frank Gore's career-best season in 2006. Norris' deal will be for $5 Million over three years, with $1.5 Million guaranteed.

Rossum's impact on the return game is likely the reason for his return, after ranking third in the NFC with a 26.8-yard kickoff-return average last season. Rossum finished second in the NFL with a 14.9-yard punt-return average.

Mike Vrabel To Chiefs Update

We reported yesterday...

There are some rumbling around the NFL that Patriots LB Mike Vrabel is being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, which would reunite Vrabel with Chiefs new GM Scott Pioli.

Pioli would be interested in adding Vrabel to his roster to provide some leadership in the locker room and help set the tone for the Chiefs as they transition to a 3-4 defensive alignment.

*UPDATE* We continue to search for confirmation and compensation in the Chiefs/Patriots trading of Mike Vrabel. We are also starting to wonder if the reason the Chiefs and Patriots have been so quiet is because the trade might involve another player, like maybe Chiefs TE Tony Gonzales or perhaps Patriots QB Matt Cassell

the closest we could come to actual confirmation is from and article in Boston.com

Vrabel confirmed yesterday that the Patriots traded him in his typical, straight-to-the-point style, responding to an e-mail asking whether he had been swapped to the Kansas City Chiefs with a one-word answer: "Yes."

Kleinsasser Agrees to 3-Year Deal

Long-time Minnesota Viking TE Jim Kleinsasser has signed a three-year $9 Million contract to return to the only NFL team he has played for.
Kleinsasser, a second-round pick out of the University of North Dakota in 1999, apperently had offers from four other teams but wanted to remain in Minnesota.
"It's nice to have it all over with, that's for sure," he said. "Being able to stay here near our friends and family is nice. It would have been tough to leave Minnesota, but in the same aspect you want to get fair value."

Brothers to Play Side-by-Side in City of Brotherly Love

Eagles' Right guard Shawn Andrew might see a familliar face lining up next to him next season in Philadelphia as the Eagles have signed Andrews' older brother RT Stacy Andrews. Head coach Andy Reid has also discussed the two swapping positions as both brothers can play either position.

The Eagles also hope having big brother around provide a stabilizing presence for his brother, who said he did not report to training camp last summer because he was suffering from depression.

The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

An interesting tidbit of information the Andrews' brothers are only the third set of brothers to play on the same offensive line since 1951, joining Jay and Joel Hilgenberg of the 1993 Saints and Dave and Doug Widell of the Broncos circa 1990-92.

Jaguars Sign Safety

The Jacksonville Jaguars have sign S Sean Considine to a two year deal, financial term were not disclosed.

A 4th-round pick of the Eagles in the 2005 draft, Considine, 27 has started 17 of 46 games as a Philadelphia Eagle. He has 165 career tackles with 1.5 sacks, 2 Int's and 2 fumble recoveries.

Considine is known as a special teams maven and topped the Eagles last year with a career-best 32 tackles on special teams.

After Some Hesitation Brown Settle on St. Louis

The St. Louis Rams ha offered free agent C Jason Brown a contract earlier this morning, but Brown was hesitant and hoped that the ravens would match it. When they did not and it became apperent no other team was willing to offer anything close to the Rams.

The former ravens center had a choice, play somewhere he wants for less money or play in St. Louis for more money. It became and easy choice and Brown chose money.

Brown received a five-year, $37.5 million contract that includes $20 million in guarantees. He will earn $24 million over the first two years of his contract.

Brown was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2005 is 6'3" and 320lbs. He's had 45 starts during his first four seasons.

Texans Hire Hall of Famer

The Houston texans have hired Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews as an assistant offensive line coach.

The 47-year-old Matthews was a first-round pick by the Oilers in 1983. He appeared in 296 games, starting 292. He started at all five positions on the offensive line. Matthews was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

McHugh Returns to Steelers

The Steelers have signed tight end/fullback Sean McHugh to a three-year, $2.57 million contract, which includes a $390,000 signing bonus.

McHugh had been a restricted free agent and the Steelers made a one-year tender offer of $1.01 million to the Penn State product on Thursday.

He played in every game but one for the Steelers last season after they signed him in early September.

Fitzpatrick Brings His Harvard Smarts to Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills have signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The four-year veteran stepped in for Bengals starter Carson Palmer, who suffered an elbow injury that required surgery. In his 12 starts he completed better than 59 percent of his passes. He threw for over 1,900 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions and a passer rating of 70.

Fitzpatrick, will likely serve as Trent Edwards back-up and mentor next season. Fitzpatrick, who played his college ball at Harvard is considered a superior student of the game with good character marks all the way around. This move may solidify the end of free agent QB J.P. Losman's run in Buffalo.

I think it’s helped me a lot in my career to play behind Marc Bulger and Carson Palmer,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’ve been able to see how they approach the game, and in doing that I’ve been able to help them out. I think that’s what I’m going to bring here. Trent is still a young guy and I’m going to help him out with his preparation. I’m going to be his eyes when he’s on the field and I’m looking forward to that relationship.

Lions Ink Morris

NFL.com is reporting that RB Maurice Morris has signed a 3-year, $7 Million contract to join the Detroit Lions.

Morris, 29, a starter the last seven seasons in Seattle, will likely fill the team's need as backfield complement to starter Kevin Smith.

QB Collins Back In Tennessee

36 year old QB Kerry Collins has signed a 2 year $15 million deal, $8.5 million of which is guaranteed to return to the Tennessee Titans.

"This is where I wanted to be, and my family loves Nashville," Collins said. "It is just part of the process. Free agency comes about, and there are lots of talks and rumors. At the end of the day, this is where I want to be, and I am happy it worked out."

Collin's shocked the NFL when he took over for starter Vince Young and lead the Titans to an NFL best 13-3 record last season, only to lose to the Baltimore Ravens in the Playoffs.

Bucs/Browns Trade Update

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded some undisclosed draft picks for talented TE Kellen Winslow Jr., son of the Hall of Fame TE with the same name.

"Cleveland was great to me," he said in Tampa. "I had a great time playing with Braylon Edwards, Brady Quinn. I'm going to miss those guys. But it's also a new opportunity. I've played with some of the guys on this team — Jeff Faine, Antonio Bryant, Luke McCown. I'm as happy as can be. I'm healthy."

Winslow returns to the state where he starred in college. An extremely athletic and talented player Winslow is mostly remembered for his off-the-field antics rather than his play.

*UPDATE* More details have been revealed in the Bucs/Brown Trade it appears that the Bucs gave up a 2nd round pick in the 2009 draft and a 5th in the 2010 draft for Winslow.

Also the Bucs and Winslow's representatives are negotiating a new contract.

Vilma Remains in New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints have come to terms with free agent LB Jonathan Vilma, signing his to a 5 years contract, the financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 2004 defensive rookie of the year lead the Saints last season with 151 tackles, three forced fumbles, a sack and an interception.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said re-signing Vilma was the team's priority during the offseason.

"Jonathan proved he could come back from his injury and play at a high level and we expect the same or better from him starting this season," Loomis said

Jets Want Moore, Again

After getting snubbed by Chris Kemoeatu the Jets quickly went out and re-signed recently released right guard Brandon Moore.

Moore has signed a four year deal worth $16 Million with $10 Million guaranteed. This is being viewed as a smart move as many believe Moore was the teams best run-blocker

Mike Vrabel To Chiefs

There are some rumbling around the NFL that Patriots LB Mike Vrabel is being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, which would reunite Vrabel with Chiefs new GM Scott Pioli.

Pioli would be interested in adding Vrabel to his roster to provide some leadership in the locker room and help set the tone for the Chiefs as they transition to a 3-4 defensive alignment.

I will keep you up to date as more information arises.

Bengals Bring Back Two

The Cincinnati Bengals have re-signed safety Chris Crocker and halfback DeDe Dorsey.
Terms and lengths of the contracts were not released Friday.

Crocker, who joined the Bengals at midseason in 2008, had become an unrestricted free agent when his contract expired. In the final eight games, he had 48 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble.

Dorsey had become a free agent earlier Friday, played in the first four games before a season-ending hamstring injury. He had two receptions for 49 yards.

Bears Sign Versatile OL Omiyale

The Chicago Bears have signed free agent Frank Omiyale to a four year contract, in hopes of stabilizing an offensive line that could be losing some key pieces.

Omiyale can play tackle and guard, but his role with the Bears is not clear. They need help at tackle, with John Tait telling them he's retiring after 10 seasons and John St. Clair an unrestricted free agent.

"We told (Omiyale) that we wanted to look at him at guard first, but we're not going to limit him in terms of his reps (to) guard," general manager Jerry Angelo said. "We'll expose him to tackle, which is where he's been predominantly trained, but we want to expose him at guard as well. How it ultimately comes to fruition, I can't really sit here and say."

6-foot-4, 310-pound Omiyale coming out of Tennessee Tech was high on the Bears draft board but was ultimately signed by the Atlanta Falcons in the 5th round of the 2005 draft.

Falcons Love Fudge

Reserve safety Jamaal Fudge has agreed to a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, according to his agent David Wyatt.

“Jamaal has been with coach [Mike] Smith since his days in Jacksonville,” Wyatt said. “He called to tell Jamaal that he was important to the team’s plans.”

Fudge played in 12 games and started one game. He played mostly on special teams, but expects to compete for a starting job this season.

Broncos Sign Hill for Four Years

The Denver Broncos have signed former Miami Dolphin free safety Renaldo Hill to a 4-year, $10 Million contract with $3 Million guaranteed.

Hill, 30, an eight-year veteran, played his last three seasons in Miami, after stints in Oakland and Arizona.

In his 8 year career Hill has 474 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 15 int's and 1 TD.

WR Williams Busted for DWI and Marijuana Possession

Free Agent WR Reggie Williams, who played last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was charged with DWI and possession of marijuana after being pulled over and arrested during a traffic stop early Friday.

Houston police department spokesman John Cannon said the 25-year-old Williams was arrested about 2 a.m. on Houston's southwest side after officers smelled alcohol on his breath and a "strong odor" of marijuana in his vehicle. A search of the vehicle found a small amount of marijuana in its console, Cannon said.

He has since been released on a $1,000 bond.

Kemoeatu Snubs Jets and re-Joins Steelers

Left guard Chris Kemoeatu turned down an offer from the New York Jets and re-signed with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, who would have been depleted on the offensive line without him.

Kemoeatu's contract is worth $20 million over five seasons and pays him a signing bonus of nearly $4 million, which is believed to be less than the Jets were offering. Nearly $6 million is guaranteed Kemoeatu, a former backup who started only two games during his first three Steelers seasons from 2005-07.

He returns to the Steelers with the idea that he will become the teams starter at left guard after the departure of Kendall Simmons who was released by the team.

Kemoeatu was a Steelers sixth-round pick in 2005, likely dropping in the draft because of a 2003 incident in which the former Utah lineman kicked an UNLV player in the face while his helmet was off.

Broncos Sign a Bunch on Offense

The Broncos signed former New England receiver Jabar Gaffney to a four-year, $10 million contract with a $3 million guarantee today.

Gaffney, 28, had a combined 74 catches for 917 yards and seven touchdowns the past two seasons for the pass-happy Pats - considerable production for a player who was both a No. 3 and No. 4 receiver. Gaffney can play all three receiver positions — the X, Y and slot.

Gaffney follows running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington, who also signed four-year deals with the Broncos today, and longsnapper Lonie Paxton, a two-time Pro Bowler who received a five-year, $5.3 million deal. Buckhalter and Arrington will become 1A and 1B to the Broncos' tailback position

Buckhalter, 30, missed the 2002, 2004 and 2005 seasons with knee injuries, but was a productive No. 2 running back the past three seasons with the Eagles. He rushed for 369 yards on 4.9 yards per carry and had 324 yards receiving this past year.

Arrington, 26, had 187 yards rushing, 255 yards receiving and 923 yards in kickoff returns for the NFC-champion Arizona Cardinals last season.

Jaguars Bring Back Two

The Jacksonville Jaguars opened free agency by re-signing center Brad Meester and cornerback Scott Starks. Terms of their contracts were not disclosed

Meester, 31, has played his entire 9 year career in Jacksonville, last season Mester played in 10 games, all starts.

Starks, 25, has 1 career start in his 4 year career, all with Jacksonville with 2 Int's one of which he returned 55 yards for a TD.

Dolphins Bring Back Berger

The Miami Dolphins decided to bolster their offensive line with a familiar face by signing Joe Berger, his agent Thomas Tafelski confirmed.

Berger, originally a sixth-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2005, will provide the Dolphins with depth at guard and center, while pushing Samson Satele for the starting spot.

The 6-foot-5, 304-pound Berger spent parts of the 2005-06 season with the Dolphins, but spent more time on a stationary bicycle rehabilitating a foot injury. He only played three games with the Dolphins before being released during the 2006 season.

Foxworth Sign With Ravens

Domonique Foxworth completed a four-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. He will make $27.2 million, of which $16.5 million is guaranteed according to his agent Brian Mackler.

This will be a sort of homecoming for Foxworth, who was born in Oxford, England, but grew up in the Baltimore area,

"I've dreamed of playing here," said Foxworth, who starred at the University of Maryland after playing at nearby Western Tech in Catonsville. "When the Ravens got here, automatically we gravitated to them just like most of the city has because they are a hard-nosed, blue-collar football team."

Browns Trade Winslow to Bucs

Ravens Cut DE Douglas

The Baltimore Ravens have parted ways with DE Marques Douglas, after one season.

Douglas re-joined the Ravens after being cut by Tampa Bay after training camp, he played in all 16 games making no starts and notched 36 tackles.

In 2007, Douglas started all 16 games for the San Francisco 49ers, but his best season came in 2004 when he last played for the Baltimore Ravens. He registered 72 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Scott Rejoins Rex in NY

Bart Scott has signed a multi year deal with the New York Jets, terms of the cotract were not disclosed.

Bart Scott, 29, will rejoin Rex Ryan in New York. Ryan was Scott's long time defensive coordinator in Baltimore, and is preparing to be a rookie head coach for the Jets.

The seven year veteran made 82 tackles with 1-1/2 sacks last season for the Ravens, who lost in the AFC Championship to the Steelers.

*UPDATE* Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Jets will pay to Scott a contract worth roughly $8 million per year.

Vikings/Texan Complete Trade for Rosenfels

A deal that was two-years in the making has finally come to fruition, the Minnesota Vikings officially completed a trade with the Houston Texans to acquire Sage Rosenfels by reaching a two-year contract extension with the quarterback on Friday.

According to a source, Rosenfels agreed to a two-year, $9 million extension with the Vikings, who gave up a fourth-round draft choice to acquire him. Rosenfels had one year remaining on his deal with the Texans that would have paid him $1.35 million.

He flew to Minnesota on Thursday and was scheduled to undergo a physical Friday morning.
Rosenfels is expected to compete with Tarvaris Jackson for the starting role in Minnesota.

It Appears That The Patriots Beat The Bills In Everything

If it was not bad enough that the New England Patriots, get to beat up on the Buffalo Bills twice every season, the Patriots have now beat the Bills in the race for RB Fred Taylor.

Both teams made contract offers to the 11-year veteran, but it appears as though that same winning edge has tipped the Taylor scale to the Patriots, as Taylor chases the elusive Super Bowl Ring.

Terms of the contract were not released

Ex-Jet Baker, Now a Patriot

The New England Patriots already beat out Buffalo earlier today in a free agent race, and now they appear to be hurting another division rival.

TE Chris Baker, who was released by the Jets last week, to save the team a $9 Million option bonus payment that was due to him in early March, had said he was interested in returning to the Jets next season. Baker will return to New York next season, but it will be in the opposing locker room.

Terms of the contract were not revealed.

Strief Gets Tendered

Strief, a three-year veteran, is a restricted free agent (RFA). He received a one-year, $1.545 million tender, team spokesman Greg Bensel confirmed.

Strief can still sign an offer sheet with another team, but by giving him the tender the Saints retain the right to match within seven days. If they decline, they would receive a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Since Strief has started only three games since joining the Saints as a seventh-round draft pick, it’s unlikely he’ll receive an offer that would require a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Haynesworth Joins the $100M Club

Well it would be the first day of free agency unless a CB signed a monster deal, check! and it wouldn't be the first day of free agency unless a record contract was signed just minutes after midnight, but with no talks occurring before the start of free agency (wink), Check!

It certainly wouldn't be the first day of free agency if it wasn't Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins who pulled off both moves, Check again!

The Free Agency's crown jewel DT Albert Haynesworth, has agreed to a seven year $100 Million contract, that could end up maxing out at $115 million based on his performance, according to sources.

Haynesworth has six teams offering more than $30 Million guaranteed, but he trimmed the list down to two teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his new employers the Washington Redskins, his former employers, the Tennessee Titans never came close to signing Haynesworth.

We will all spend the next few months debating this move by the Redskins, paying $100M for a player who has not played in 16 games since 2002, who has off the field issues, and who has only played to his immense potential in contract years. Let the debating begin.

Hall Re-Signs in Washington

Free Agency started out as expected with a CB signing a monster sized deal, DeAngelo Hall has re-signed with the Washington Redskins to a six-year $54 Million deal that included $22.5 Million in guarantees. This is the second consecutive year that Hall has signed a huge contract.

Hall signed a seven year, $70 million contract he signed a year ago with Oakland Hall with around $24 million guaranteed, but was released after 8 games. He signed a week later in Washington and played in the final seven games of the season, starting four.

On the season, Hall had 5 interceptions - three in Oakland and two in Washington.

Colts, Saturday Agree to 3-year Deal

The Indianapolis Colts re-sign center Jeff Saturday to a three year deal. The three-time Pro Bowl center who was expected to be one of the top centers on the free agent market suddenly changed plans Thursday, signing a deal that will likely allow the 33-year-old retire to finish his career with the team that he won a Championship with. Terms of the Contract were not revealed.

"It looked very dire," Saturday told The Associated Press. "I had made up my mind that we were headed to free agency and until yesterday that was the plan. Then they came up with this deal. I'm extremely excited about continuing the journey and being part of this team."

Let The Madness Begin

Spicer Set to Be Released By Jags

According to Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Gene Smith the team will release veteran defensive end Paul Spicer on Friday.

The 33-year-old defensive end has been with the Jaguars since 2000, playing in 115 games with 63 starts. He is one of only seven players to play nine seasons for the Jaguars. He will finish with 28½ sacks, tied for third in team history. Last season, Spicer played in all 16 games, starting 10.

Bills Release Dockery and Royal

The Buffalo Bills have released LG Derrick Dockery and TE Robert Royal.

Releasing Dockery and Royal frees up a total of about $8 million in salary cap space for the Bills, who have missed the playoffs for nine consecutive years, the worst streak in franchise history.

"These business decisions are never easy, especially when you are talking about two great individuals in both Derrick and Robert," Bills chief operating officer Russ Brandon said in a statement. "We wish them the best of luck in the future."

Dockery a virtual nobody in the NFL until the Bills signed him to a seven-year $49 million deal on the first day of free agency in March 2007, was scheduled to make $21.75 million over the final five years of his contract, not including incentives.

Royal, a seven year veteran and was released after spending three years with the Bills. He was scheduled to make just under $3 million over the final two years of his contract.

Redskins Release Plackemeier

The Washington Redskins released punter Ryan Plackemeier yesterday, and have also completed new contracts for two veterans, according to league sources.

Plackemeier, who was signed before last season's seventh game to replace struggling draft pick Durant Brooks, had one year remaining on his deal and was placed on waivers. Like Brooks, he placed near the bottom of the NFL in most punting categories.

The redskins reworked the contracts of defensive end Andre Carter and wide receiver Antwaan Randle El. According to league sources, the deals were reworked in order to lower their costs against the 2009 salary cap. Both players had deals set to expire after 2012; their new contracts run through 2015. Saving the team approximately $4.5 Million in 2009

QB Johnson Released by Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have released back-up QB Brad Johnson, a move that does not come as a complete surprise.

Brad Johnson was released Thursday after playing just four games over two seasons in Dallas. The 17-year NFL veteran was ineffective as a starter during a three-game stint last season.

Johnson , 40, was 41-of-78 passing for 427 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions for a 50.5 rating. He also was sacked eight times.

In his career Johnson has has 29,054 passing yards with 166 touchdowns. He won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay after the 2002 season

Steelers Make a Flurry of Moves

The Pittsburgh Steelers made qualifying offers to restricted free agents right tackle Willie Colon, cornerback Anthony Madison and tight end Sean McHugh and offers to exclusive-rights free agents fullback Carey Davis and tackle Jeremy Parquet.

The Steelers also released offensive guard Kendall Simmons and linebacker Mike Humpal on Thursday.

As you all know if another team offers a deal to any of the restricted free agents, the Steelers get to match it or be compensated with draft choices. The Steelers retained exclusive negotiating rights with Davis and Parquet.

The Steelers selected Colon in 2006 and he became a starter for last two games of his rookie season. McHugh was signed to the team in September. Davis was signed in 2006 and Parquet was signed to the practice squad in August.

Simmons played seven seasons with the Steelers after being taken in the first round of the 2002 draft. Humpal was the first of two sixth-round draft picks by the Steelers in the 2008 draft.

Bryant Sign Franchise Tender

His agent publicly expressed his and his clients anger towards the Franchise tender, but it did not take long for Antonio Bryant to act on it. Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant signed the franchise tender and will remain in Tampa Bay next season at a fully guaranteed salary of $9.884 Million.

Both sides say they want to work out a long term contract and have until July 15th to do so.

Bengals Tender Two LB's, Release Four

The Bengals tendered contract offers to linebackers Brandon Johnson and Rashad Jeantry that gives them the right to match any offer. If the Bengals decide not to match another team's offer, they get a second-round draft pick as compensation.

The team decided not to make tender offers to running back DeDe Dorsey, receiver Glenn Holt, linebacker Corey Mays and safety John Busing, allowing them to become free agents.

Cards Tender Two, Cut One

The Cardinals tendered one-year qualifying contract offers to restricted free agents Leonard Pope and Gabe Watson, the team has also released veteran long snapper Nathan Hodel.

The tender offer, which guarantees draft pick compensation if the players agree to a contract with another team and the Cardinals refuse to match were applied to tight end Pope and Watson, a defensive tackle, have until April 17 to sign the qualifying offer.

Watson received a second-round tender which means if another team signs him and the Cardinals don’t match the offer, Arizona receives a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Pope received a tender that allows the Cardinals the opportunity to match any offer he receives from another team or receive a draft choice from that team equal to which round he was originally selected, in this case the third round.

The Cardinals also extended offers to seven exclusive-rights free agents: cornerback Michael Adams, fullback Tim Castille, tight ends Ben Patrick, tight end Stephen Spach, linebacker Pago Togafau, center Lyle Sendlein and tackle Elliot Vallejo.

Lucas says "No Dice" on Deal to Lions

According to Adam Scefter of NFL Network the Carolina Panthers tried to trade cornerback Ken Lucas to the Detroit Lions. Problem is, once the two sides were engaged in discussions, Lucas let it be known that he did not and would not play in Detroit. Thus, trade talks were abandoned even though some in the league thought the trade might go through.

The Panthers are desperate for some salary cap space and these talks are an indication of what Carolina has in mind for Lucas, who is scheduled to make $5.6 million in base salary this season. If Carolina cuts Lucas this week, it will free up $2.375 million against its salary cap.

Safety Wilson Signs in Miami

Recently released by the Oakland Raiders, safety Gibril Wilson was scooped up today by the Miami Dolphins, who are getting a head start on free agency. Terms of the contract were not released.

Wilson finished last season as Oakland's second-leading tackler with 129. Wilson, 27, spent his first four seasons with the New York Giants and was a starter on the team that defeated New England in Super Bowl XLII. His release from Oakland came as a surprise as he was signed to a six-year, $39 million contract in March 2008.

The Wilson signing is the third major personnel move Miami has already made this offseason. Within the past week, the franchise also inked right tackle Vernon Carey and linebacker Channing Crowder to multiyear contract extensions.

Super Bowl MVP Holmes Scheduled for Marijuana Hearing

According to the Associated Press,

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on a misdemeanor marijuana charge stemming from an October traffic stop.

Holmes' vehicle was pulled over on Oct. 23 and Pittsburgh police say they found three marijuana-filled cigars. Police say they stopped Holmes because his vehicle was similar to one they were looking for in a drug sting.

According to the Police they smelled burning marijuana when they stopped Holmes, who was cooperative and alerted officers to the drugs.

The 24-year-old player is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana. The charge carries up to a year in jail, but probation or a fine is common in most cases.

Coles Renegotiates Contract, Loses $6M and Becomes Free Agent

Laveranues Coles did the almost unthinkable in these tough times, he walked away from a guaranteed $6 million payday this year in hopes of receiving a long-term deal in free agency. He had hoped to secure the long term contract with the Jets but when it became evident that was not going to happen, Coles and the team reached a compromise Wednesday that allowed him to restructure his deal and become a free agent on Friday, a team spokesman said.

Coles, a 31-year-old wide receiver, spent seven of his nine NFL seasons with the Jets (He spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons in Washington), but his production has declined in recent years.
He has had one 1,000-yard season in his last five years and he has sustained multiple concussions.

Coles had hoped to retire as a Jet. But when he approached the team about a contract extension last off-season, threatening to sit out the off-season program if he did not get it, the team instead guaranteed the final two years of his contract for a total of $11 million.

Again this offseason Coles approached the Jets for a contract extension, the team balked, and Coles agreed to leave the $6 million he was due this season on the table in exchange for the Jets’ restructuring his contract to allow him to go elsewhere when free agency opens on Friday. The Jets, who would have been on the hook for the money if they had released Coles, saved $6 Million off the salary cap.

The restructuring appears initially as a win-win, assuming Coles signs on with another team. The door still remains open that Coles could return to the Jets, although it seams unlikely.

“I have had the pleasure of getting to know Laveranues since he entered the league in 2000,” General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. “He is a fierce competitor, a great teammate and a good friend who has always given his best to the New York Jets. I spoke with him today and expressed my appreciation for his contributions both on and off the field. This move will allow Laveranues to explore his options, and we both agreed to keep the lines of communication open.”

Look for Coles to catch on with Miami and reunite with good friend and Dolphins' QB Chad Pennington.

Salary Cap to Grow to $127 M for 2009

According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network the salary cap will grow in 2009.

Teams didn’t spend as much as they were supposed to under the collective bargaining agreement the past three years, therefore the salary cap will increase over $4 million to $127 million for this coming year. The collective bargaining agreement calls for cap adjustment down if teams spend over the cap in cash and adjustment up if they don’t spend up to the cap. Teams believed they would see a mild increase in the salary cap, but this is bigger than teams expected.

The increase defies logic in this tough economic time, but as we are less than 24 hours from the start of free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room.

For teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, this is tremendous news and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.

Crowder Shocks Everyone and Re-Ups with Dolphins

Dolphins LB Channing Crowder spent last week preparing for free agency, saying he wanted to see what his market value was, apperently the only market he was interested was in Miami.

Crowder decided, after receiving advice from former teammate Zach Thomas, to stay with the city that drafted him and signed a 3 year contract to remain a Dolphin.

''I love Miami,'' Crowder said. ``So I basically told [agent] Joel [Segal] that if we could get to some numbers where everybody is happy, let's pull the trigger.''

Segal and Crowder had hoped initially for a longer deal but were to stay in Miami, because that means that Crowder can continue playing for coach Tony Sparano and linebackers coach George Edwards.

Crowder, who calls Edwards ''the best assistant in the NFL, period,'' said he began hearing from more and more of the former Dolphins players that he respects that he should consider working toward a way to remain with Miami.

Recently, he had long discussions with former Dolphins nose tackle and close friend Keith Traylor, who played for six different teams during his NFL career. Traylor, like Thomas, told Crowder not to get caught up in the hype of free agency simply for the money.

''As good as we did last year, I've had three head coaches in four years,'' Crowder said. ``But now, I know the system. I know the defensive scheme. I know who my linebacker coach and my defensive coordinator will be. Now, I can just build on that. Now, I can maximize my talent. It's time for me to become a Pro Bowler.''

Chargers Re-Sign Lineman

Kynan Forney signed for one-year with the Chargers last season but did not play in a single game a game, despite the lack of playing time the 8th year player has agreed to a two-year, $4.8 million contract that will pay him $2 million in the 2009 season.

The 30-year-old, who played his college ball at Hawaii had 89 starts in seven seasons with the Falcons. At 6-foot-3, 302 pound Forney is an athletic guard who works well in a zone blocking scheme.

With guard Mike Goff headed into restricted free agency, Forney might be given a chance to start at guard.

Texans Cut Three

The Houston Texans have released three players from their roster as they prepare for free agency. The players looking to catch on with a new team are defensive end Anthony Weaver, safety Will Demps and offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam.

After 3 largely unsuccessful seasons, Weaver, who started each game last season opposite Mario Williams and finished with 45 tackles. Though he started all but four games in his time with the Texans, Weaver leaves the team with just one sack.

The 32-year-old Salaam became expendable after he spent this past season as a backup to 2008 first-round pick Duane Brown the starting left tackle. Salaam started 30 games his first two seasons in Houston.

Demps, who has also played for the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens, started five games last season and had 32 tackles. He came to Houston in 2007 and started eight games that year.

Brandon Jacob Gets His Long Term Deal

The New York Giants have kept their word, and signed running back Brandon Jacobs, or "Earth" in the teams 3-headed rushing attack dubbed "Earth Wind and Fire". Jacobs, the G-men's 264-pound workhorse, signed a four-year, $25 Million extension including $13 Million in guaranteed Jacobs will earn $15 over the first two years.

"I was confident all along that this was going to get done I didn't panic one bit," Jacobs said "I know the reason we did it the way we did; I knew I was going to be here. I was super-confident and I am here. I'm happy about it."

Jacobs was designated the team's franchise player and was guaranteed $6.6 million for the upcoming season.

"This team is full of young talent," Jacobs said. "We brought some great talent in here the last two years and those guys are still learning and getting better. Our offensive line is great and will continue to be great. There are a lot of young guys on our team that are still playing great, great football. I'm looking for big things out of our football team next year."

Brandon Jacobs received a much greater role with the Giants following the retirement of Tiki Barber after the 2006 season, . He responded with the first 1,000-yard rushing season of his career in 2007 and helped lead the Giants to the Super Bowl championship.

Last season, Jacobs rushed for a career-best 1,089 yards and led the team with 15 rushing touchdowns despite missing three games with a knee injury. Derrick Ward or the "Wind" component of the trio, ran for 1,025 yards to make the Giants only the fifth team ever with two 1,000-yard running backs, is also due to become a free agent. The Giants' No. 2 running back is likely to command big money to be a starter elsewhere.

The Giants were committed to Jacobs.
"Both parties are happy to get a long-term deal done," general manager Jerry Reese said. "Now Brandon can totally concentrate on the offseason program and get himself ready to go this fall."

Green and Bennett Cut By Rams

Not to be left out the St. Louis Rams have released some veteran players as well. Quarterback Trent Green and wide receiver Drew Bennett got the Axe on Wednesday.

The release of Green is expected to save the Rams about $1.3 million in salary cap space. The team saves a whopping $50,000 by cutting Bennett.

Bennett signed a six-year, $30 million deal two years ago after six seasons with the Titans. But he struggled in 2007 and broke his leg in the first quarter of this season's opener, missing the remainder of the season.

Trent Green, 38, is in his second stint with the team played in three games last season, completing 38 of 72 passes for 525 yards with no touchdowns and six interceptions. Green has a long history of injuries, specifically concussions which will likely end his career. One of such concussions came after Trent Green, who at the time was a Miami Dolphin, tried to cut block Houston Texans' Travis Johnson only to be left unconscious on the field from a knee to the head.

"I Likeded Da' Scrip Clubs"

I was discussing with the Future Mrs. Alldayfootball the other day how Pacman Jones thinks he will be able to sign on with another NFL team this season after being released by the Dallas Cowboys and it reminded me about how much Pacman "likeded da' Scrip Clubs"

Enjoy!

Panthers Making Moves and Clearing Cap Space

As everybody in the NFL is clearing up roster space befor the beginning of free agency, the Carolina Panthers are no different. After signing tackle Jordan Gross to a six-year, $56.4 Million contract, and slapping DE Julius Peppers with the franchise tag the Carolina Panthers have spent this week clearing up some cap space to accomodate these moves.

By releasing wide receiver D.J. Hackett, running back Nick Goings and offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges the Panthers have saved $4.74 Million in cap space. They also recently turned a $10 Million roster bonus scheduled for cornerback Chris Gamble into a guarantee, which saved the Panthers another $8 million. The team has also restructured the contract of linebacker Landon Johnson.

Rogers Feels Snubbed by Mangini, Wants Out

Adam Schefter reported Tuesday night that Browns Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is so disgruntled with new coach Eric Mangini and the new regime that he's asked the team not to pay his guaranteed $6 million option bonus next month.
According to a source close to Rogers, he would rather be released after only one season even though he's owed $15 million in guaranteed money.
Rogers' beef come from two off-season incidents in which he feels Mangini snubbed him. The first time, Mangini walked into the Browns' training room and didn't say hello to Rogers, the source said. The second time, Mangini and Rogers were together in the media room at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards on Jan. 23 and neither acknowledged the other.
Mangini said at a news conference Feb. 4: "I didn't even realize Shaun was there at the time. I know that's probably hard to believe considering how big he is and how big I am. It's like two destroyers missing each other."
The report says some believe there are other reasons why Rogers wants to leave the Browns, but didn't specify. We all have to assume it is in reaction to the fact that Albert Haynesworth another Pro-Bowl defensive tackle is getting ready to sign a monster contract and Rogers is hoping to cash in as well.
Rogers is currently signed to a six-year, $42 million deal that includes $20 million in guarantees and a total of $23 million over the first three years.

Bucs Cut Brooks and 4 others in Youth Movement

The Bucs sent shockwaves through One Bucs Place Wednesday by releasing 11-time Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks as part of a sweeping youth movement.
The team also released running back Warrick Dunn, receiver Joey Galloway, linebacker Cato June and receiver Ike Hilliard.

"We want to give our younger guys a chance to play,'' general manager Mark Dominik said Wednesday.

Brooks was a first round selection of the Buccaneers in 1995, and has been the Bucs' biggest team leader, and community icon.

A surefire Hall-of-Fame selection, Brooks was named to the Pro Bowl for the 11th time following the 2008 season. But he had taken a reduced role the past two seasons, coming off the field on passing downs. Brooks had restructured his contract two years ago, trimming his inflated salary-cap to around $3-million per year, his release is more about a move toward younger players than finances.

For some of the other players, finances were at least a consideration. Galloway's cap number was $3.5-million for 2009. Dunn's and June's cap numbers also were more than $3-million. Collectively, the moves will clear millions more in salary-cap space as the Bucs enter the start of the free-agent signing period, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

New head coach Raheem Morris has said he wants a tougher team and will practice in pads more often. These moves will be linked to both Morris and new GM Mark Dominik and will certainly set the tone for their tenure in Tampa Bay. Whether it works or fails, they will go down as the duo that dramatically changed the team's course.

Doughty, Evans Not Expected to Get Offer from Redskins

The Washington Redskins won't make a tender offer to safety Reed Doughty, a team source said, and haven't made an offer to defensive lineman Demetric Evans, meaning both are expected to hit the open market when free agency

A restricted free agent, Doughty began the 2008 season as the starting strong safety but played in only four games because of a nerve problem in his back that required surgery. Doughty became expendable with the emergence of rookie Chris Horton, who finished the season with 76 tackles, 1 sack and 3 interceptions.

The Redskins met with Evans' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, during the scouting combine at Indianapolis but have not extended a contract offer to the seven-year veteran, a team source said. The Redskins are hoping that Evans will receive little attention on the open market and will be able to bring him back at a lower salary.

Fred Taylor Extends AFC East Trip, Will Visit New England

Free agent running back Fred Taylor met with the Buffalo Bills yesterday morning and told reporters he was headed for New England to visit with the Patriots. It isn't known when this meeting will take place but is expected to be today.

It appears the two AFC East rivals are the only teams bidding for the services of the Pro Bowl back, who was released by Jacksonville last week. Taylor's relationship with Buffalo's head coach Dick Jauron, who was previously on the Jaguars staff, may give Buffalo the advantage.

“I just want to put everything on the table, get back with my agent (Drew) Rosenhaus and just see. At my age, it has to be a fit,” Taylor said in Buffalo, when asked about his free agent tour. “It has to be that right fit from an offensive standpoint, as far as the staff, just everything. At the end of these visits, or wherever I have to go from here, I’ll just put every team on the plate and say this place, these are the pros and cons, and this place, these are the pros and cons.”

Taylor, 33, would also love a Super Bowl ring, which might weigh in the Pats’ favor.
“I really feel like I’ve done well with my body and I can get another two or three years in,” Taylor said. “(Winning a ring) is what I wanted to do while I was down in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen, so it will be somewhere else.”

Gordon Returning to Vikings on 1-Year Deal

Cornerback Charles Gordon has agreed to a one-year deal with the Vikings, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Gordon's 2008 season came to an end in the Vikings' 28-27 victory over Green Bay on Nov. 9 when he suffered a gruesome injury to his left ankle on a punt return at the Metrodome.
Gordon, who averaged 4.4 yards on 15 returns, also had been used as the Vikings nickelback in passing situations.

Gordon, signed by the Vikings in 2006 as a free agent out of Kansas, played in all 16 games in 2007 and had three starts. He started two of the nine games in which he played last season.
Gordon is expected to receive a base salary of about $530,000, with a chance to earn another $500,000 in incentives.

Nugent Refuses Jets Offer, Will Hit Market

According to the The Star-Ledger Kicker Mike Nugent has declined an offer from the Jets to return and will test the free-agent market.

After suffering a strained right quadriceps in the 2008 season opener against the Miami Dolphins, Nugent was replaced by veteran Jay Feely for the rest of the season. In the final year of his contract he is now set to become an unrestricted free agent this Friday. The Jets had been facing a tough decision on whether to keep Nugent or Feely, Nugent has made the decision for them.

"The Jets have been really cool about the situation and gave me time to decide whether to stay," Nugent told The Star-Ledger. "They approached us last week to re-sign, and also called again this week, and gave us a chance to talk about making a decision. I have so much respect for the organization and my teammates, but I feel it might be time for me to move on. (General manager) Mike (Tannenbaum), (director of football operations) Ari (Nissim) and the coaches have been incredibly understanding of my decision process and I am really grateful to them."

Nugent, was selected in the second round (47th overall) of the 2005 out of Ohio State. By refusing the Jets offer he has become the top kicker on the free-agent market now that the Titans' Rob Bironas has re-signed with Tennessee. Nugent, who attempted only one field goal last season and was injured at the time, hit 75 of 91 career field-goal attempts (82.4 percent) during his three healthy seasons with the Jets.

Bucs Tender Restricted Free Agent Penn

On the Same day that the Buccaneers released five players from its roster the decided they wanted to keep another, if only for the short term.

After failing to work out a long term contract the Bucs notified starting LT Donald Penn of their decision to tender him a top-tier restricted free agent offer making it highly unlikely he'll be able to secure a long-term deal elsewhere.

Since Penn is a restricted free agent, the Bucs can retain the right of first refusal if he obtains a competing offer. If he were to be acquired by another team, this move requires that club to compensate the Bucs with first- and third-round picks.

"They pretty much take him off the market with this," agent Rocky Arceneaux said.
"We're not really accepting this by any means," he added. "We're trying to go out and see what free agency has to offer. That's the only thing that 's afforded to us. But this is definitely prohibitive."

Penn will earn roughly $2.8-Million if he ends up playing for the tendered offer. He and his representation feel that he stood to make much more on the open market. He'll have to wait a year, as he will now be an unrestricted free agent in 2010.

Fred Taylor Visits With Bills

Former Jacksonville Jaguar running back Fred Taylor got a head start on the NFL free agency period, visiting with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old running back is looking to latch onto a new team after spending 11 seasons in Jacksonville. He is also expected to meet with the New England Patriots. Free agents can begin signing with new clubs Friday.

"At the end of the day, my No. 1 objective is to get somewhere and compete," Taylor said after his Buffalo visit. "Nothing is going to be given to me. I don't expect that."

It may appear from the outside that Taylor may have a tough time squeezing into a spot in the crowded Buffalo backfield with Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson firmly in place, but Lynch's recent off-the-field issues has his status up in the air.

Lynch was recently charged with three gun-related misdemeanors after his arrest earlier this month in Southern California. Because it was his second off-field incident in the past year, he faces a possible fine and suspension from the league.

"My job is to just come in and be a helper, and not stir up any problems or anything like that," he said. "I've been sharing my whole life."

Despite the issues the Bills still appear to be commited to Lynch, and Taylor said he wouldn't mind being a possible mentor to the 22-year-old.

"He's young with so much potential," Taylor said about Lynch. "Not saying I'm looking to be a father-figure to anyone or anything like that, but I know what I've gone through throughout my career. But the team hasn't said anything along that nature."

Vikings Trying To Get Some Sage... Again.

The Texans and Vikings are close to a trade that would send quarterback Sage Rosenfels to Minnesota, possibly for a fourth-round draft pick, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

This is the second consecutive year in which the Vikings have been interested in acquiring Rosenfels, to be their starting quarterback.

Rosenfels wanted to be traded to the Vikings last season in hopes of starting for a team that has Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor at running back and has led the NFL in run defense for two straight years.

Last season, the Vikings reportedly offered a third-round draft choice, but the Texans wanted a second-round pick. Both teams denied an offer was made.

The Vikings currently have both Tavaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte on its roster, but both have struggled as the teams starter. If the trade is completed Minnesota will want to extend Rosenfels' contract.

*UPDATE* It was reported on NFL Networks Total Access that the trade is completed and will be announced at 12:01 AM Friday at the beginning of Free Agency.

Titans Might be Interested in Steelers Washington

Looking to improve their wide receiver position this offseason, the Tennessee Titans might be interested in acquiring some free agents.

One player that may have caught the eye of the Titans, according to a source, could be Pittsburgh Steelers free agent Nate Washington.

Washington played this season as the Steelers third receiver behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes and caught a career-high 40 passes for the Super Bowl champions.

In three seasons with the Steelers, Washington has 104 receptions and averaged 16.4 yards per catch with nine touchdowns.

Other free agent receivers who will hit the unrestricted market include Cincinnati’s T.J. Houshmandzadeh, San Francisco’s Bryant Johnson, the New York Giants’ Amani Toomer and the Titans own pair of free agents Brandon Jones and Justin McCareins.

Redskins Making Serious Claims For Haynesworth

The Washington Redskins appear to be the new leader in the Albert Haynesworth competition, and the Houston Chronicle is reporting that they will do whatever it takes financially to acquire Haynesworth when free agency begins Friday at 12:01AM

A source tells the Houston Chronicle that the Redskins will wait for the Tennessee Titans to make an offer to Haynesworth and then will likely offer him a $100 million contract with an average of $15-16 million per year. "My guy is almost never wrong and [Redskins owner] Dan Snyder gets what he wants," writes the Chronicle's Lance Zierlein.

SI.com's Peter King reported earlier this week that Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, was seen having dinner with Snyder in Indianapolis, where the NFL Combine is being held.

Chiefs Release Four

The Kansas City Chiefs have release four players, including three starters as they prepare for next season. Quarterback Damon Huard, cornerback Patrick Surtain and linebacker Donnie Edwards and tight end Mike Merritt will all be looking for work when free agency begins Friday.

Huard, Surtain and Edwards were veteran players who didn't appear to fit with the new philosophy of general manager Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley, so the moves were no surprise.

Huard, 35, had started 21 total games the last three seasons, but after 5 games he threw 2 TD and 4 Ints and was replaced by rookie Tyler Thigpen. Huard’s best season in Kansas City came in 2006, when he threw 11 touchdown passes and only one interception in 10 games, eight of them starts.

Surtain, 32, was scheduled to make $7 Million base salary in 2009 and his release instantly freed up $6.184 Million.

Edwards, 35, started just 4 games last season and was scheduled to make $5 million in base salary in 2009, and the Chiefs saved $4.5 million against the salary cap by cutting him.

Merritt was basically begging for his release, when earlier this month he was arrested for marijuana possession.

Marvin Harrison Granted His Release

The Colts certain hall of fame and long time wide reciever Marvin Harrison was granted his release today by the Indianapolis Colts. The organization had previously asked Harrison to restructure his salary, to help the team with their cap difficulties, so that his pay would be more at par with his sliding performance.

Harrison instead asked for his release and plans to test the market for his worth.

Colts GM Bill Polian released this statement.

"We today have released Marvin Harrison because of salary cap
considerations
."

"Marvin let us know his preference was to be released. Both Jim Irsay and I
felt very strongly that after Marvin’s long and dedicated service to the Colts,
we would, in this painful circumstance, be guided by Marvin’s wishes."

"This is a sad day for the Colts. Marvin Harrison, in addition to being a
certain Hall of Famer, has been a good friend, model professional and a loyal
and dedicated teammate. His record-setting achievements brought about by immense
talent, work ethic and dignified professional demeanor have thrilled Colts fans
for a generation. Marvin today takes his place alongside Raymond Berry, forming
the greatest receiving tandem in Colts history. He will, in due time, join
Raymond in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and take his rightful place with the
greatest players in the history of the game."

"On behalf of his legion of fans in Indianapolis and his many friends and
admirers in the Colts organization, Jim Irsay and I sincerely thank Marvin for
all he has done for us. We wish him every blessing and success in the
future."

"When Marvin’s playing career comes to an end, we look forward to bringing
him “Home” to Indianapolis, installing him in the Ring of Honor and joining all
his fans in thanking him and celebrating his remarkable career."

"Godspeed Marvin, we will miss you."

Steelers Not Talking To Smith's Agent

Steelers Left Tackle Marvel Smith is set to become a free agent this Friday at 12:01 AM, and he is taking the silence from the Steelers that they plan on letting him.

"I haven't heard from them," agent Ken Zuckerman said yesterday. "We're planning that they're moving forward and we're moving forward. That's what we're looking at. They tagged Starks, they're talking to other linemen, so we're assuming that they're moving forward in a different direction and so are we."

With Starks taking up such a huge chunk of salary cap space and the Steelers not being in the healthiest of cap positions, it may be time for Marvel to move on.

Smith and his agent are not surprised, nor angered, the Steelers have made no moves to keep him. Zuckerman works for Priority Sports and Entertainment, which also represents guard Alan Faneca, who left the Steelers as a free agent last year at age 31. Smith, entering his 10th season, turns 31 in August.

"I don't think he's disappointed," Zuckerman said. "Listen, if you look at the track record, the Steelers keeping guys going into their third deal, they don't keep many. They've paid Max Starks over two years probably more than Alan Faneca made over two years.

Cowboys Will Let Free Agents Test Market

The Dallas Cowboys will let all eight of their unrestricted free agents test the open market, owner Jerry Jones announced Monday via the team’s Web site.

As we know free agency will begin this Friday Feb 27th. The Cowboys have eight unrestricted free agents: Defensive end Chris Canty, safety Keith Davis, quarterback Brooks Bollinger, guard Joe Berger, defensive tackle Tank Johnson and linebackers Keith Burnett, Zach Thomas and Carlos Polk.

The Cowboys have roughly $12 million in cap space and hope to sign linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a long-term deal. Jones has said repeatedly the team won’t be big players in free agency.
The Cowboys would like to re-sign Canty, but he’s expected to ask for a deal in the range of $50.5 million with $18.5 million guaranteed. If that’s the case, the Cowboys likely wouldn’t match offers from other clubs.

Raiders Continue Purge

The Oakland Raiders continue to purge the roster to improve their salary cap position. Their most recent cuts cleared up $8.6 Million and resulted in starting left tackle Kwame Harris and fullback Justin Griffith hitting the unemployment line.

With these recent moves the team has saved approximately $14.6 million in cap room, but also left team lacking some talented players like safety Gibril Wilson, wide receiver Ronald Curry and defensive end Kalimba Edwards. The five releases have also put $11.5 million of dead money onto their $123 million cap. If you include the carryover cap losses from DeAngelo Hall who was cut last year, the Raiders have close to $20 million of dead money on their salary cap.

Harris was signed last year from the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a three-year, $14 million contract and was due a $6 million roster bonus by the end of the week. Harris struggled late in the season with his blocking and with penalties.

Griffith tore up his knee against Baltimore on Oct. 26, would have counted just over $1 million against the cap. The Raiders also have a replacement on hand in Oren O'Neal.

Dan "Dumbest QB Ever" Orlovsky To Test The Market

The man made famous for "Pulling an Orlovsky", has decided he will test free agency. Lions QB Dan Orlovsky was given the dubious catch phrase when he ran out of the back of the end zone while trying to escape pressure from Minnesota's Jared Allen resulting in a safety.

Now the QB who is unaware of where the back of the end zone is is certain that he will get a better offer from another team than the offer he recieve to be the back-up for the Vikings.

"They made an offer, but I'm going to test the market and see what's out there for me," Orlovsky said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I'm pretty confident that I'm going to get a better offer."

According to many draft experts the Lions are interested in drafting standout Georgia QB Matt Stafford with the #1 overall pick in this years draft. I think it would be wise for Orlovsky to sign the Lions offer and collect whatever guaranteed money they are giving him before they add another QB to the roster and Orlovsky finds himself watching football from his home like the rest of us.

Milloy and Falcons Go Seperate Ways

Lawyer Milloy, the starter at safety the last 3 seasons in Atlanta has been released from the team. His agent Todd France, met with the team in Indianapolis at the Scouting combine and was informed of the decision.

“We did meet in Indianapolis and at this point it’s in his best interest to explore other opportunities,” said France.

Milloy started 48 of 49 games in three seasons with Atlanta. He provided guidance and strong leadership to a young secondary last season.

We felt as an organization that it was in the best interests of both parties to go in our own directions and let him test the market in free agency,” Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said Sunday. “We feel that Lawyer has been a significant contributor to the Falcons organization both on and off the field. We are very proud to have had him involved here. We wish him all of the best in his future career in football and life outside of football.”

Milloy, 35, was selected in the second round (36th overall) in the 1996 draft by the New England Patriots. He played seven seasons with the Patriots and three with the Buffalo Bills before signing with Atlanta in 2006.

Number 3 Spot in the Draft is For Sale

Kansas City Chiefs general Manager Scott Pioli has made it clear, if you want to move up to #3, make him an offer. It's true most GM's would openly say this, but Pioli comes from New England Patriots who not only openly say they are willing to trade, they often do. Last year, Pioli and the Patriots made three draft-day trades, including moving down three spots (from a pick acquired from San Francisco) and taking linebacker Jerod Mayo with the 10th pick.

Even though we’re three, we could be at 23,” Pioli said at the NFL scouting combine. “Even though you’re at 23, you could be at three. The draft strategy is know the entire board, know all the players, know there might be opportunities to manipulate the draft board, moving up or down, and gain draft picks or give away draft picks to get veteran players. … The whole thing is very fluid. Draft day is opportunity. Anything we can do to make the team better right now or in the future. … Sometimes what you’re doing to make your team better can be trading for picks in the future. You’re collecting players, you’re collecting picks, you’re collecting methods and ways to accumulate good players.”

Mr. Pioli, stay close to your phone.

Crabtree Has Stress Fracture in Foot, Needs Surgery

Top NFL Prospect and former Texas Tech Red Raider WR Michael Crabtree has a small stress fracture in his left foot that will require a pin to be surgically inserted to stabilize that area of the foot. He is expected to be out 10 weeks after the surgery.

The fracture was discovered when a bone scan was performed as part of the medical portion of the NFL scouting combine. Crabtree did not work out at the Combine and has left early to return home.

After meeting with his advisors Crabtree has decided that he will hold off surgery until after his Pro Day on March 26th. Where he will run the 40-yard dash.

"It has been there for about a year and it's never caused me any pain. I can play with it the rest of my life. It won't stop me from running. I'm going to run."

Crabtree won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver each of the two years he played for the Red Raiders and became the first repeat winner since it was established in 1994. He also earned All-America honors the past two seasons.

Lewis tells Ware he wants to be a Cowboy

As pointed out by Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware said flat out in an interview with the Cowboys website that LB Ray Lewis has approached him about playing in Dallas next season. Here is an exerpt from the interview.

“When we played Ray Lewis and Baltimore at the end of the season,” Ware told the the Cowboys website, “He came over and pointed to my helmet. He said, ‘I want to wear this star on my helmet, that’s my dream . . . that’s my dream.’ When we got to the Pro Bowl, he did it again. He came at me every day. It’s a great opportunity for him. His door is open. He’s an unrestricted free agent. He’s trying to get down where the star is. He told me he needed me to get him Jerry Jones‘ phone number for him. I just busted out laughing.

“I think he is genuine,” Ware said. “Believe me, he is genuine. He talked to me before he became a free agent. He talked to me two years ago about it. He calls me about once a week and talks about it then. I even said, ‘Hey, Ray, I’m tired about talking about this. You need to find Jerry Jones’ number and fly out there and talk to him. … He says things like ‘D-Ware, I need to get down there. You’re the pass-rush guy and I need to play with you. Just call Jerry for me. Just call him. Just call him.’”

Saturday to be a Free Agent next Friday

Long time center of the Indianapolis Colts Jeff Saturday is preparing himself to enter free agency next week.

The Colts were unable to sign Saturday, who entered the NFL as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens, before being released in 1998. He quickly signed with Indianapolis and has been a 9-year starter for the team.

Although he will test the market, Saturday said he is still willing to return to Indy.

AFC East Ready to Battle it Out for Taylor

RB Fred Taylor, who was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, he is coming off a season where in 13 games he rushed for just 556 yards and a career low 3.9 yard per carry. On the outside it would appear that the 33 year old running back is on the downside of his career and might consider hanging it up.

Not if the AFC East has anything to do with it. Both the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills appear to be interested in the 11 year veteran's services for next season.

Taylor would be good insurance for the Patriots. Laurence Maroney, who played just three games last season, is coming off shoulder surgery, and Sammy Morris, who led the Patriots last season with 727 yards, has missed time with injuries the last two seasons.

The Bills are in the market for a back after Marshawn Lynch was charged last Thursday with three gun-related misdemeanors stemming from an incident in California.

Now it remains to be seen if all of this is a pre-draft smoke screen or if the two teams will battle it out for the running back who ranks 16th in NFL history with 11,271 yards.

Redskins Cut Washington

The Washington Redskins have cut starting LB Marcus Washington in a salary cap move. Washington was set to earn $4.5 Million in base salary for 2009.

"It's going to be different without Marcus - not just in the linebacker room, but for the whole defense," said H.B. Blades, who started four games when Washington was hurt last season and inherits his job for now. "He was always upbeat, no matter what was happening. None of the rest of us are that boisterous."

Washington, who arrived as a free agent from Indianapolis in 2004, recorded 107 tackles and 4.5 sacks that season en route to his lone Pro Bowl appearance. He posted 93 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2005. The following year, Washington suffered a hip injury and missed the final two games with a sprained knee. Injuries to his ankle, elbow, hip, shoulder and hamstring followed the past two seasons as Washington, 31, totaled just 92 tackles and five sacks.

Raiders Cut Three To Fit Record Contracts Under Cap.

In order to accomodate the huge contracts recently signed by Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler, the Raiders have released 3 players, including starting strong safety Gibril Wilson.

Joining Wilson in free agency will be wide receiver Ronald Curry and defensive end Kalimba Edwards.

Wilson, due a $2.5 Million salary and a $4.5 million roster bonus on March 5th, was signed to a six-year, $39 Million deal last offseason after leading the Super Bowl champion New York Giants in tackles.

Curry, due a $3.5 Million salary in 2009. The team's leading receiver in 2006 and 2007 with 117 receptions for 1,444 yards, Curry slumped to 19 catches, 181 yards and was plagued by dropped passes in 2008 before being phased out in favor of rookie Chaz Schilens.

Edwards joined the Raiders as a free agent from Detroit and recorded 5 sacks on the season, but none over the final 8 games. Edwards was to earn $2.25 Million in the second year of a two-year contract.

The three releases will save the Raiders approximately $6.2 Million in salary cap space. The club was reportedly $8 Million under the cap last week before making Lechler (four years, $16 Million) and Asomugha (three years, $45.3 Million) the highest-paid players at their respective positions.

Jets Cut Two More

As the Jets continue to purge their roster to make cap space, two more players have recieved the axe. The most recent cuts were veterans TE Chris Baker and G Brandon Moore.

The two moves will create approximately $9 million in salary cap space for the Jets, meaning they're now roughly $27 million under the projected 2009 salary cap of $124 million with the start of free agency arriving on Friday

Baker, a seven-year veteran, spent his entire career with the Jets. In September, he signed a three-year extension that guaranteed him $9 million from 2009 to 2011 if he was still on the roster on March 5.

Moore, a six-year veteran coming off the best year of his career in which he helped pave the way for running back Thomas Jones' AFC-leading 1,312 yards and career-high and franchise-record 13 rushing touchdowns. He was due a $7 million roster bonus on March 5, but was believed to be open to reworking his deal to stay with the team for which he has played his entire career.

Vernon Carey will Carry on his Career in Miami

Vernon Carey and Jake Long will hold down the Dolphins' offensive tackle positions for the next few years. The Dolphins signed Carey to a six-year, $42 Million deal, with a reported $15 Million guaranteed.

Carey, 27, has started 59 straight games for the Dolphins helps to solidify the perimeter positions on the offensive line, with Carey, the team's first-round pick in 2004 out of Miami, at right tackle and Long, who started 16 games and played in the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2008, on the left side.

The deal comes a day after the Dolphins chose not to place the franchise tag on Carey, which would have locked him up for one year for $8.45 million.

Lions Plan to Have #1 Pick Locked-Up Pre-Draft

Although the pick won't be made until Commissioner Roger Goddell announces it on stage April 25th, that doesn't mean the Lions won't have already decided who the pick will be, and hopefully have him under contract.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said Friday he'll follow the lead other teams have set in recent years, targeting multiple players as the potential No. 1 overall choice and using that as leverage in hammering out a deal before the draft.

"I think probably even more than a week before," Mayhew said. "It's going to be a complicated contract, so I think we have to get out ahead of that at least a couple weeks and start narrowing it down and start talking to people. I envision us talking to at least three different players, at least that, and trying to see where those guys are and trying to get something done prior to the draft. It's pretty important that we have the contract done prior to the draft."

Several teams have had success with this strategy, the Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with No. 1 pick Jake Long several days prior to the draft. The Houston Texans had Mario Williams signed before they selected him No. 1 in 2006. Both players are off to promising careers.

In 2007, the Oakland Raiders didn't get JaMarcus Russell signed and he ended up being a contract holdout who missed all of training camp as a rookie, and has yet to get his career on track.

Asked if a contract agreement would be a prerequisite for their No. 1 pick, Mayhew said, "I don't know if I'd use the term 'deal-breaker' but it's of critical importance that we have a contract done prior to the draft. That's very, very important to us."

CB Hanson gets Long-Term Deal, but What's the Deal With Lito?

The Eagles have confirmed that they have agreed to a new five-year contract with cornerback Joselio Hanson. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Hanson, 27, played in every regular season game for the Eagles over the past three seasons, after playing 13 games for San Francisco in 2004. He started three games and grabbed his first NFL interception in 2008.

"We are happy to keep Joselio in Philadelphia with a long-term contract," coach Andy Reid said in a statement released by the team. "He's become a productive and valuable player on defense for us over the last few years, especially in nickel situations. Good cornerbacks are certainly a valuable commodity in this league and Joselio definitely fits that category."

With the long term signing of Hanson, this might be the final push out the door for Lito Sheppard, the former starter whose role has continuously diminished after the big free agent signing of Asante Samuels before the 2008 season. Hanson had replaced Sheppard as the teams 3rd corner by mid-season.
