Giants Dockery Signs Tender

Cornerback Kevin Dockery signed a one-year free agent tender for $1.54 million on Monday, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday.

The 25-year-old who starred in college at Mississippi State had 36 tackles and an interception in 13 games last season, he also returned a blocked field goal 71 yards for a touchdown in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in December.

Dockery had until the end of the week to sign the offer. The Giants tendered Dockery, a restricted free agent, at a second-round level.

Dockery joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He has been a backup to Corey Webster and Aaron Ross the past two seasons.

Giants and Browns Trade for Braylon Edwards Agreed to in Principle

The Giants have been trying to find a playmaker to replace the legally challenged and recently released wide receiver Plaxico Burress. The two prime suspects are Arizona wideout Anquan Boldin and Cleveland WR Braylon Edwards.

We have just heard that ESPN 950 in Philadelphia is reporting that they have learned the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns had agreed in principle on a trade that would send Braylon Edwards to New York for first and fifth round picks in the draft later this month. The rumor also said that the Giants had called a press conference for 10am on Thursday.

It is being reported elsewhere that the Browns have set the asking price at 1st and 3rd round picks to obtain the rights to the former Michigan star receiver. So if this rumour turns out to be true the Giants have definately gotten themselves a steal.

Stay tuned and if the rumor has legs we will likely know for certain at 10am tomorrow.

Giants Release Burress

The New York Giants have released wide receiver Plaxico Burress, a little more than four months after the talented but troubled wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the thigh in a New York City nightclub.

The former Super Bowl hero's tenure in New York had more than its share of ups and downs. The highs included the Super Bowl winning TD catch against the previously undefeated New England Patriots, the lows were highlighted with the aforemention self shooting, all with fines and suspensions sprinkled in between.

The 31-year-old, who was suspended by the Giants for the final four weeks of the season for conduct detrimental to the team and fined after the shooting, also faces possible NFL sanctions for violating its personal conduct policy.

The G-Men had been willing to stand by their star receiver, through all of his legal troubles, assuming they saw remourse and progression in Burress' attitude. Apperently they did not see significant change, the final straw being when the front office requested that Plaxico restructure his contract to be more team friendly. When he refused, he weas shown the door.

Burress caught 344 passes with the Giants, which places him 12th on the franchise's career list, one catch ahead of Earnest Gray and three behind Aaron Thomas. Burress had 3,681 receiving yards and caught 33 touchdown passes for the Giants.

New York now finds themselves with a significant hole in their roster but find themselves with an opprotunity to repair this hole with a variety of options, either through the draft where a WR like Rutgers' Kenny Britt, North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks or Ohio State's Brian Robiskie may be available with the 29th pick.

If they are not sold on any of those draftee's the G-men have plen ty of ammunition to pull off a trade for Arizona's Anquan Boldin or Cleveland's Braylon Edwards, whom they have already been linked to, but haven't found the right deal yet.

"Plaxico's contribution to our championship season in 2007 can never be underestimated or undervalued," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He displayed tremendous determination throughout that season. Having said that, I have always been as concerned about Plaxico as a man as I have been about him as a player, and my hope is that everything that has happened over the past several months represents a turning point. He is a young man with a family who has a whole lifetime ahead of him, and I personally wish him and his family well."

Browns Add Insurance, Sign WR Patten

The Cleveland Browns may be without the services of WR Donte Stallworth, for a long time, if not permanently as he awaits the legal repercussions of a fatal accident he was involved in earlier this month. When Stallworth's car struck and killed a pedestrian with his Bentley in Miami Beach.

In response to these events the Cleveland Browns have added some insurance in the form of WR David Patten, who had previously played with the team in 2000. The terms of his contract were not disclosed.

The well travelled wide receiver has played the last two seasons in New Orleans but has also had previous stops in the New York Giants, New England, and Washington. He won two Super Bowl titles with the Patriots.

For his career Patten has 324 catches for 4,715 yards and four touchdowns in 147 regular-season games in 12 NFL seasons.

Rams Finally Sign Butler

It took them longer than they had hoped but the St. Louis Rams have finally signed S James Butler, to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. The move reunites Butler with his former defensive coordinator from New York and current Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Butler will provide a physical presence in St. Louis' secondary and is pegged to be the replacement for recently released Corey Chavous. He will play alongside the Rams franchise player O.J. Atogwe

In four seasons with the Giants, Butler played in 58 games and started 27. Butler, 27, started 26 games the past two seasons. He visited with Rams officials the first week of free agency, and St. Louis has been pursuing him ever since.

For his career, Butler has 190 tackles, including a career-high 68 tackles in 2008. The former Georgia Tech standout, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2005, also has six career interceptions and 21 passes defensed.

Terrell Owens Cut by Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spent countless press conferences trying to convince you it wasn't going to happen, he placed a gag order on his coaches at the Scouting Combine, so his coaching staff couldn't answer the question. Despite all the smoke and mirrors, the Dallas Cowboys finally did what we all expected them to do, they have released WR Terrell Owens.

By cutting Terrell Owens the Cowboys will be able to rid themselves of a locker room cancer and sideline distraction, but the team will have to absorb a huge hit to the salary cap, a reported a $9.675 Million, stemming from the new contract Owens signed last summer, a four-year, $34 Million deal that included a $12 Million bonus.

Owens, who has always been known as a productive receiver, is remembered more often for his outlandish and bizarre touchdown celebrations, like the Sharpie in the sock, or pouring popcorn all over himself. Even more bizarre were his off the field antics, giving an interview while doing sit ups in his driveway, or the accidental overdose/suicide attempt.

It was all of these reasons that Jerry Jones loved T.O., with every outlandish act brought more media attention to "America's Team" and more attention means more money for Jones, but the one thing Owens did not bring to Dallas was playoff victories, and that may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for Jones. Owens is not worth the distraction if he is not winning you championships.

Over his 13-year career, he's a five-time All-Pro and ranks second in career touchdowns, fifth in career yards receiving and sixth in career receptions. He turned 35 in December, but remains a physical specimen.

Look for Owens to re-emerge in a place like New York, with the Giants. Owens would love the bright lights of New York and the Giants may need to replace the production of Plaxico Burress. Another possibe landing spot could be Washington, as owner Dan Snyder loves to spend money on big name players no matter how much baggage they bring with them. I think a wild-card team for getting Owens would be the Oakland Raiders, I think Al Davis will fall in love with T.O.'s production and is arrogant enough to think he could keep him happy.

"Wind" Will be Blowing in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed free agent running back Derrick Ward, to team with Earnest Graham.

Ward's deal is worth a reported $17-million, according to NFL.com, with $6-million in guarantees within its first year.

Ward, who was the "Wind" component of the New York Giants' "Earth, Wind and Fire" backfield, rushed for 1,025 yards last season, but is also a very proficient receiver out of the backfield, catching 41 passes last season.

Giants Go 3-for-3 This Weekend

The New York Giants had a great first weekend of free agency, first they brought in and signed LB Michael Boley to fill their need at WLB, next they brought in pass rushing DT Rocky Bernard for a visit and he too signed on the dotted line before the meeting was over.

Now, the Giants have gone a very impressive 3 visits, 3 signings with the addition of versatile defensive lineman Chris Canty, who not only adds depth to an already impressive D-line it hurts a division rival as Canty's former team the Dallas Cowboys play in the same NFC East division as the Giants.

Canty has signed a 6-year, $42-Million deal with $17.25 Million guaranteed. Canty, 26 stands 6'7" and tips the scale at 304lbs will likely switch to defensive tackle with the Giants after four seasons as a 3-4 defensive end in Dallas, but his versatility as an end will likely be explored in certain situations.

You have to wonder how the Giants have been so successful this weekend, and perhaps they are taking a hint from The Godfather Series and making these players "an offer they can't refuse." Whatever their strategy the Giants have further solidied and already impressive defense, just 48 hours into free agency.

Seahawks Sign Cole

The Seattle Seahawks have dashed the hopes of the Green Bay Packers by signing away one of the Packers’ biggest offseason priorities, DT Colin Cole.

Early Sunday morning, Cole signed a five-year, $21 Million contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Cole’s contract includes $5 million guaranteed.

Cole had been in discussions with Green Bay, Tampa Bay but in the end decided he wanted to be the man to replace Rocky Bernard in Seattle.

With Cole off the market, Chris Canty finds himself as the only big name free agent defensive lineman left and could find himself the subject of a bidding war with teams like Tampa Bay, Green Bay and the New York Giants interested in his services.

J.J. Arrington Deal Not Finalized, May Dissolve

J.J. Arrington reportedly sign a 4 year contract with the Denver Broncos yesterday, and was preparing to join another newly aquired free agent back Correll Buckhalter, but the deal has hit a snag.

The Broncos and Arrington had reached an agreement in principle Friday on a four- year contract, according to the player's agent, J.R. Rickert. But in reading through the contract language, some issues arose that threaten to kill the deal.

"J.J's back in Arizona," said Rickert. "The deal's not dead yet."

The deal may not be dead yet, but it has prompted the Broncos to line up a visit with free agent RB Derrick Ward today, whom the Broncos view as the #1 free agent back on the market, and after failed visits in Cincinnati and Philly, Ward has apperently dropped his asking price.

Rocky Bernard Signs with G-Men

New York Giants continue to bolster their defense through free agency today by adding DT Rock Bernard, just a few hours after adding LB Michael Boley. Terms of the contract were no revealed.

Bernard, who turns 30 in April, is a pass rushing threat up the middle and in his 7 seasons in Seattle he has racked up 29 career sacks.

The Giants must have a great pitch man because they are 2-for-2 on free agent recruiting trips so far. The team is hosting another defensive lineman Chris Canty from division rivals the Dallas Cowboys, and as the chances of signing Canty after inking Bernard may appear slim, the Giants proved in their Super Bowl run, you can never have too many good D-lineman.

Giants Add Boley

The New York Giants had a successful dinner yesterday with free agent LB Michael Boley, it was so successful that Boley decided to have all his dinners in New York from now on, as he and the Giants have decided on a five-year $25 Million contract with more than $10 Million guaranteed

Boley, 26, spent the past four years in Atlanta, he played in all 64 regular-season games for the Falcons, but he lost his starting job late last season. He's 6'3", 223 lbs and is particularly adept dropping into coverage.

This signing fills a need of the Giants at weakside line backer or "Will" backer, where the G-men had inconsistent play from the trio of Chase Blackburn, rookie Bryan Kehl and Gerris Wilkinson.
Boley will likely now move in as the permanent starter.

Safety Wilson Signs in Miami

Recently released by the Oakland Raiders, safety Gibril Wilson was scooped up today by the Miami Dolphins, who are getting a head start on free agency. Terms of the contract were not released.

Wilson finished last season as Oakland's second-leading tackler with 129. Wilson, 27, spent his first four seasons with the New York Giants and was a starter on the team that defeated New England in Super Bowl XLII. His release from Oakland came as a surprise as he was signed to a six-year, $39 million contract in March 2008.

The Wilson signing is the third major personnel move Miami has already made this offseason. Within the past week, the franchise also inked right tackle Vernon Carey and linebacker Channing Crowder to multiyear contract extensions.

Texans Cut Three

The Houston Texans have released three players from their roster as they prepare for free agency. The players looking to catch on with a new team are defensive end Anthony Weaver, safety Will Demps and offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam.

After 3 largely unsuccessful seasons, Weaver, who started each game last season opposite Mario Williams and finished with 45 tackles. Though he started all but four games in his time with the Texans, Weaver leaves the team with just one sack.

The 32-year-old Salaam became expendable after he spent this past season as a backup to 2008 first-round pick Duane Brown the starting left tackle. Salaam started 30 games his first two seasons in Houston.

Demps, who has also played for the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens, started five games last season and had 32 tackles. He came to Houston in 2007 and started eight games that year.

Brandon Jacob Gets His Long Term Deal

The New York Giants have kept their word, and signed running back Brandon Jacobs, or "Earth" in the teams 3-headed rushing attack dubbed "Earth Wind and Fire". Jacobs, the G-men's 264-pound workhorse, signed a four-year, $25 Million extension including $13 Million in guaranteed Jacobs will earn $15 over the first two years.

"I was confident all along that this was going to get done I didn't panic one bit," Jacobs said "I know the reason we did it the way we did; I knew I was going to be here. I was super-confident and I am here. I'm happy about it."

Jacobs was designated the team's franchise player and was guaranteed $6.6 million for the upcoming season.

"This team is full of young talent," Jacobs said. "We brought some great talent in here the last two years and those guys are still learning and getting better. Our offensive line is great and will continue to be great. There are a lot of young guys on our team that are still playing great, great football. I'm looking for big things out of our football team next year."

Brandon Jacobs received a much greater role with the Giants following the retirement of Tiki Barber after the 2006 season, . He responded with the first 1,000-yard rushing season of his career in 2007 and helped lead the Giants to the Super Bowl championship.

Last season, Jacobs rushed for a career-best 1,089 yards and led the team with 15 rushing touchdowns despite missing three games with a knee injury. Derrick Ward or the "Wind" component of the trio, ran for 1,025 yards to make the Giants only the fifth team ever with two 1,000-yard running backs, is also due to become a free agent. The Giants' No. 2 running back is likely to command big money to be a starter elsewhere.

The Giants were committed to Jacobs.
"Both parties are happy to get a long-term deal done," general manager Jerry Reese said. "Now Brandon can totally concentrate on the offseason program and get himself ready to go this fall."

Titans Might be Interested in Steelers Washington

Looking to improve their wide receiver position this offseason, the Tennessee Titans might be interested in acquiring some free agents.

One player that may have caught the eye of the Titans, according to a source, could be Pittsburgh Steelers free agent Nate Washington.

Washington played this season as the Steelers third receiver behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes and caught a career-high 40 passes for the Super Bowl champions.

In three seasons with the Steelers, Washington has 104 receptions and averaged 16.4 yards per catch with nine touchdowns.

Other free agent receivers who will hit the unrestricted market include Cincinnati’s T.J. Houshmandzadeh, San Francisco’s Bryant Johnson, the New York Giants’ Amani Toomer and the Titans own pair of free agents Brandon Jones and Justin McCareins.

G-Men Tag Jacobs

The New York Giants guaranteed themselves that Brandon Jacobs would be back in New York next season, or the would receive a king's ransom for the 264 lbs running back. The Giants used their franchise tag on their star running back, a move that will guarantee Jacobs, who was due to become a free agent Feb. 27, $6.6 million next season.

Jacobs, who led the team with 15 TD's rushed for 1,089 yards and is integral to the Giants offensive success. GM Jerry Reese has said that he and Jacobs will still continue to work on a long term deal, this move is hopefully just a temperary measure.

"With the deadline approaching it was the right business thing to do at this point, although we are hopeful to get a longer term deal hammered out in the near future," Reese said. "I did speak to Brandon and we had a very good conversation today."

"That is the reason I am being franchised," Jacobs said. "Buying more time to get a deal done."

Giants Making Roster Moves

The New York Giants wasted little time to make their first roster moves of the off-season. Re-signing backup QB and former first overall pick (Houston Texans, 2002 draft) David Carr, who played sparringly last season going 9-12 for 155 yards and 2 TD's

"I think that going beyond a one-year opportunity allows the relationship between Eli and Dave to continue to grow," coach Tom Coughlin said. "A lot of really good positive things come out of the meeting room with regard to two veteran quarterbacks ... I think it is also beneficial to David Carr's career that he spend a minimum of another year with the New York Giants."

Carr's body is releshing the back-up roll right now, as his first 5 season in Houston resulted in a weekly beating, he set a record for taking 76 sacks his rookie season.

"Last year was just such a positive experience for me I wanted to try to do it again," Carr said. "Just try and kind of get another one of those years under my belt just learning and continuing to better myself. Honestly, there are spots out there and starting positions and there could have been some things where it would have just been my Houston situation all over again and it wasn't really something I was looking forward to, to tell you the truth."

The Giants have also released three veterans who finished the 2008 season on injured reserve, defensive backs Sam Madison and Sammy Knight and Running Back Reuben Droughns.

Droughns, Madison and Knight had a combined 33 years of NFL experience but were backups until they were hurt.

"Dancing with the Hall of Famer"?

Former NY Giant and Hall of Fame Linebacker Lawrence Taylor is reportedly apart of the new cast for ABC's "Dancing with the Stars".

The rumors began when actor Ashton Kutcher's twitter feed read, "Just met LT, the old school, Lawrence Taylor. Expect to see him in prime time soon. Can't say where, but he better work on his foot work."

If these rumors are true, then Taylor would join the likes of fellow NFLers Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Jason Taylor and Warren Sapp as contestants on the show. Or perhaps we've just been punk'd. The new cast will be revealed on Sunday so stay tuned.

(UPDATE): It has been confirmed, Former NY Giants Superstar Lawrence Taylor will join, olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, computer guru Steve Wozniak, singers Belinda Carlisle, Chuck Wicks, Lil' Kim, Denise Richards, David Alan Grier and Gilles Marini, Steve-O of MTV's "Wildboyz", husband and wife duo Jewel and Ty Murray and TV host Nancy O'Dell.

"Dancing with the Stars" returns for its eighth season March 9 with a two-hour episode.
