Alldayfootball.com NFL MVP award

The NFL regular season is coming to a close and as we all prepare for "The Tournament" I figured that Alldayfootball.com should discuss our choice for the league MVP. A few weeks ago the list of candidates was very different with names like Warner and Brees as popular choices, and if there was an award for mid-season MVP either of those two would have had my vote. As we all know the award is for a complete seasons worth of work and late season collapses in the Bayou and the Desert have eliminated those two players from the running.

After hours of evaluation and careful following there are two remaining candidates and one clear winner. Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson are both offensive superstars who are carrying their respective teams late into the season.

An uncharacteristic slow start in Indy because of two off season knee surgeries kept Peyton off this list for most of the season, but he has fully recovered and rebounded to Pro-bowl form. A master of deciphering opposing defenses, Manning will figure you out and slice you apart with surgeon-like precision. A struggling Addai/Rhodes backfield has provided very little support in the running game so Peyton Manning has put the Indianapolis on his shoulders and carried them back from a rocky 3-4 start to an 8 win streak and an 11-4 record along with a guaranteed 7th consecutive playoff appearance.

Peterson on the other hand doesn't have the supportive cast of Offensive playmakers like Manning does as evidence by his squad still struggling to lock up a playoff berth. His teams struggles should not take away from the dominating impact that Peterson brings every Sunday. Leading the NFL in Rushing yards when teams are constantly stacking the box with no fear of the Vikings lackluster pass attack is no small feat. Peterson's upright punishing style and blazing speed make him a threat to go the distance on any carry. A match-up nightmare in just his second season, his impact will not be truly felt until the rest of the offense can bring some balance.

When the season comes to a close and the awards are handed out, Peyton Manning will be clearing a spot for another piece of hardware. A 3rd NFL MVP trophy whose team would be at the bottom of the division without him. An irreplaceable conductor who orchestrates an offense beautifully from the line of scrimmage.

Eric’s Week 14 Power Rankings

Here we go, Week 14 power rankings. We saw a bunch of upsets, a couple of last second victories and several bad teams prove why they are bad.

  • 1. Tennessee Titans (12-1): Best record in the NFL and clinched a home playoff game, things are looking good for the Titans
  • 2. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3): A huge 4th quarter comeback has the Steelers sitting pretty, but tough matchups against Baltimore and Tennessee are just around the corner.
  • 3. New York Giants (11-2): An ugly loss proves they are human but the G-men are still the team to beat in the NFC
  • 4. Baltimore Ravens (9-4): Ed Reed might be able to beat to beat Washington on his own but the whole team will need to show up for their upcoming game vs the Steelers
  • 5. Carolina Panthers (10-3): A Big win at home puts them in 1st place in the tough NFC South and 2nd seed in the playoffs.
  • 6. Indianapolis Colts (9-4): Made the Bengals game look like a scrimmage with the scout team, building steam as the playoffs approach
  • 7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-4): Got steamrolled by Carolina in primetime, lets hope this defensive performance is an "amorition" (Thanks Emmitt)
  • 8. Atlanta Falcons (8-5): A loss to the Saints hurts but the falcons are still in the hunt.
  • 9. Arizona Cardinals (8-5): With a win this weekend the cardinals secured their First home playoff game since 1947! and the #9 spot on this ranking.
  • 10. Dallas Cowboys (8-5): Don't the cowboys realize that it is important to win games in December if you want a shot at games in January?
  • 11. Miami Dolphins (8-5): Locked in a 3-way tie for 1st place could the dolphins be the favorite to win the division?
  • 12. New York Jets (8-5): Jets look to stay upbeat, but fans are bracing for a late-season collapse.
  • 13. New England Patriots (8-5): Struggled to beat the Seahawks and lost bruschi for the remainder of the season
  • 14. Denver Broncos (8-5): Can Denver overcome the loss of another RB this season? Peyton Hillis is added to IR
  • 15. Philadelphia Eagles (7-5-1): Big win against NYG to keep the eagles alive. Solid defense and a great running back thats how you win in December.
  • 16. Minnesota Vikings (8-5): Vikings are getting a little respect as their matchup against Atlanta is bumped into better time slot.
  • 17. Washington Redskins (7-6): Redskins were out-matched by Ravens, maybe Head Coach Jim Zorn has hit the "Rookie wall".
  • 18. New Orleans Saints (7-6): Nice win against Atlanta but is it too little too late for the Saints?
  • 19. Chicago Bears (7-6) : Bears looked impressive against pathetic Jags, but have big test against Brees and the saints if they want to stay in playoff race.
  • 20. San Francisco 49ers (5-8): Injury to Frank Gore means 49ers are forced to look at other options on the roster.... might not be a bad idea for other positions.
  • 21. Houston Texans (6-7): Texans looked hot in chilly Lambeau but now have a tough challenge at home against the Titans.
  • 22. Green Bay Packers (5-8): Not only did the Packers lose big to the Texans, they've also lost OT Mark Tauscher for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.
  • 23. San Diego Chargers (5-8) : Too bad the Chargers can't play the Raiders all season long.
  • 24. Buffalo Bills (6-7): Doesn't matter which country they play in Bills keep piling on the losses.
  • 25. Cleveland Browns (4-9): Different Quarterback, same problems. What happens to the Browns Offense?
  • 26. Oakland Raiders (3-10): Proved me wrong in a huge loss to the Chargers, start preparing for the Draft.
  • 27. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9): They can deny it all they want, the Jaguars have quit.
  • 28. Seattle Seahawks (2-11): Surprisingly good play from Seneca Wallace almost had Seashawks steal a win from Patriots.
  • 29. St Louis Rams (2-11): The Rams are looking really good this season.... just not on Sundays .
  • 30. Kansas City Chiefs (2-11): as the NY Giants showed us last season, No pass rush = No Chance. The Chiefs pass rush is pathetic, and so is their record.
  • 31. Cincinnati Bengals (1-11-1) A sign of the Bengals incompetance, they have signed Mike Doss to help their defense..... too bad it was 14 weeks too late.
  • 32. Detroit Lions (0-13): Minnesota tried to give them a win but they gave it away, and now they have released CB Brian Kelly. What is going on in Detroit?

Eric's Week 14 Power Ranking's

  • 1. New York Giants (11-1) Can anybody stop the GIANTS of the NFL
  • 2. Tennessee Titans (11-1) Thank you Detroit for helping the Titans get back into their winning ways... they could have hung 100 points, but got distracted by the smell of Turkey and Blackberry pie.
  • 3. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) Bad weather and big hits thats what the Steelers do!
  • 4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3) With their defense anything is possible for Tampa Bay
  • 5. Indianapolis Colts (8-4) An ugly win against Cleveland, but the team is getting ready for a playoff run.
  • 6. Baltimore Ravens (8-4) Does Baltimore finally have an offense to match its defense? If so watch out.
  • 7. Carolina Panthers (9-3) Are preparing themself for a Huge home game on MNF. Jake Delhomme is still having nightmares about the first matchup against Tampa
  • 8. Atlanta Falcons (8-4) What a surprise out of Atlanta this season, I'd like to see them make the playoffs.
  • 9. Dallas Cowboys (8-4) Getting hot at the right time, but what will Happen to Tony Romo in the Playoffs?
  • 10. New York Jets (8-4) Was Favre bracing the New York fans for an early playoff departure?
  • 11. Washington Redskins (7-5) What happened to Jason Campbell the red-hot redskins Offense? Maybe Zorn needs to whip more Drill bags at him.
  • 12. Miami Dolphins (7-5) The Dolphins will have to win out if they want to "wildcat" their way to a wildcard spot.
  • 13. Arizona Cardinals (7-5) This team will likely win 3 of the final 4 games, because they are all at home, is there a worse travelling team in the NFL?
  • 14. New England Patriots (7-5) Cassel was brought back down to earth against the Steelers, and now they will struggle to make the playoffs
  • 15. Minnesota Vikings (7-5) Wonder if the temp. restraining order preventing the Williams' suspension will come back to bite them in the playoffs?
  • 16. Denver Broncos (7-5) Getting some Balance back and building some momentum for the playoffs. Getting back some veterans on Defense will be a big help.
  • 17. Chicago Bears (6-6) Bears best shot to win is a pair of Vikings suspensions? How pathetic is that?
  • 18. Green Bay Packers (5-7) What has happened to the smothering defense?
  • 19. Philadelphia Eagles (6-5-1) Will missing the playoffs force McNabb out of Philly.... many teams hope so.
  • 20. New Orleans Saints (6-6) Without fixing the defense this team will remain a middle of the pack team no matter how good the offense is.
  • 21. Houston Texans (5-7) Slowly the pieces are coming together for this Franchise
  • 22. San Francisco 49ers (4-8) The 49ers are ranked this high more as a point to prove how bad Buffalo is right now
  • 23. Kansas City Chiefs (2-10) Despite their record I think KC is playing better as of late and could probably go 3-1 to close out the season.
  • 24. Buffalo Bills (6-6) Could a hotter team at the beginning of the season cooled off any quicker than this team?
  • 25. San Diego Chargers (4-8) What a dissapointment, I fully expect them to lose to Oakland on Thursday night.
  • 26. Cleveland Browns (4-8) This team is so bad even the coach doesn't believe the new Quarterback has the tools to win.
  • 27. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8)Jacksonville should be ranked even lower after their pathetic performance in Houston, they quit long before the game was over.
  • 28. Oakland Raiders (3-9) This team may win on Thursday night but will no longer be successful under the dreadful reign of the Undead Zombie Ninja Al Davis
  • 29. St Louis Rams (2-10) This team is a mess right now, let's hope the rams retain Haslett so he can turn this team around.
  • 30. Seattle Seahawks (2-10) This team is such a mess the previously named successor to Holmgren is considering taking another job
  • 31. Cincinnati Bengals (1-10-1) ....
  • 32. Detroit Lions (0-12)... should actually be ranked somwhere around 35 I think Florida, Alabama and USC could all give the Lions another notch in the loss column.

Well There you have it .. Week 14 power rankings let me know what you think

Why Tampa Bay should go after Donovan McNabb in the off-season

Buccaneers Head Coach Jon Gruden loves quarterbacks, it has been said that Gruden dates his QB’s but does not marry them. He came close with Gannon in Oakland and may have tied the knot with Brad Johnson if he were a few years younger. If the Buccaneers head office is smart all that can change in the off-season.

I am in no way bashing Jeff Garcia or the great work he has done in Tampa over the last 2 years. I think he is a very talented QB and has a knack for winning, he has done wonders to revitalize the Bucs offense. The reality is that Garcia is approaching his 39th birthday and it is unsure how much longer he will be able to be successful with his throw your body in there style of quarterbacking. I admire Garcia’s toughness and desire to win but he looks so frail when he scrambles out of the pocket that I am afraid he is one hit away from having his bones turned to gravel.

Now, McNabb is not known for invincibility either but when he is on the field he has all the tools to take the Tampa Bay offense to an elite level to match their defense. Behind only Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, McNabb has the highest winning percentage of all active QB’s yet McNabb has never gotten the respect he deserved in Philadelphia. From being booed on draft day to the recent mid-game benching for Kevin Kolb with puking and Super Bowl exhaustion sprinkled in between, the fans in Philly have always found reasons to hate McNabb and have been trying to push him out the door for years now.

Let’s hope Philadelphia fans keep pushing because if McNabb found his way to Tampa he would find himself with a young talented team with a great o-line to protect him. If McNabb found his way to Tampa, Jon Gruden would find himself with an experience quarterback (which he loves) who is 10 seasons deep in the west coast offense (which Gruden is a master of). Gruden will have a well-versed student for the young QB’s on the roster McCown and Josh Johnson (or whoever Gruden drafts or trades for next) while they develop into the full-time starter in 3 or 4 years down the road.

So in the off-season it is up to Tampa Bay’s front office to make the necessary calls and to get Gruden a Huge engagement ring so he can finally make that commitment to his QB. Let’s hope he goes to Jared’s.
