Salary Cap to Grow to $127 M for 2009

According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network the salary cap will grow in 2009.

Teams didn’t spend as much as they were supposed to under the collective bargaining agreement the past three years, therefore the salary cap will increase over $4 million to $127 million for this coming year. The collective bargaining agreement calls for cap adjustment down if teams spend over the cap in cash and adjustment up if they don’t spend up to the cap. Teams believed they would see a mild increase in the salary cap, but this is bigger than teams expected.

The increase defies logic in this tough economic time, but as we are less than 24 hours from the start of free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room.

For teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, this is tremendous news and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.

Marlin Jackson Wins Case, Gets $225,000

According to the Associated Press.

Indianapolis Colts CB Marlin Jackson was awarded $225,000 in a lawsuit against a fellow student who claimed the football player assaulted him in 2003 while he played at Michigan.

A Washtenaw County jury ruled Thursday that Jackson was defamed by Shahin Farokhrany.
Farokhrany said he was assaulted with a bottle at a party and sued Jackson for $10 million.

Jackson countersued, saying a bottle was not used and the accusation hurt his reputation in NFL pre-draft interviews.

Jackson's attorney Ellis Freatman III told The Associated Press that the jury award is roughly equivalent to the difference in income from being picked one or two spots higher in the draft.
Jackson, a defensive back, was the Colts' first-round pick in 2005.

Colts D-Tackle Arrested... No Charges Filed

Indianapolis Colts Defensive Tackle Darrell Reid was arrested on disorderly conduct and trespassing charges early Sunday after refusing to leave a nightclub's parking lot. According to a police report, Reid, 26, arrived at Club Oxygen about 1:30 a.m. as an off-duty officer was helping clear the nightclub's parking lot because the club was at capacity.

After being asked by the officer to leave the parking lot Reid made several excuses as to why he would not leave ncluding that he knew the owner and should be allowed inside and ""I don't have to because I am a football player with the Indianapolis Colts."

In 2007, he was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession in his hometown of Freehold, N.J. The officer who responded noticed a strong smell of marijuana and saw a small plastic bag in the open door of Reid's rental car that contained marijuana, police said

(UPDATE): Reid will face no criminal charges, for his confrontation with an off-duty police officer. He was accused of disorderly conduct and trespassing. Marion County prosecutor's office has decided those charges aren’t merited by the evidence, spokesman Mario Massillamany said, in part because Reid’s exchange with police officers occurred on public property.

Reid’s location became key because his car had not fully left the public right-of-way, Massillamany said. “We asked police to do more research,” he said, “and we determined that the location of the incident was on public property, not private.” He also said there was insufficient evidence to file a disorderly conduct charge.
