The Jets just announced that they have released veteran linebackers David Bowens and Brad Kassell. The moves will save the Jets roughly $3 million in salary cap space.
Bowens, a 10-year veteran, played in all 16 games for the Jets last season, starting five times. He had 40 tackles, 4.0 sacks, and an interception in 2008, his second season with the Jets.
Kassell, a seven-year veteran who spent the last three seasons with the Jets, missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury.
With the release of Bowens and Kassell, the Jets are now approximately $18 million under the projected 2009 salary cap of $124 million.
