Favre Watch 2009

Well it appears that it is not an offseaon n the NFL anymore without a Favre retirement announcement, and keeping true to form Brett Favre did just that today.

Jets QB Brett Favre (still feels weird to say that) instructed his agent "Bus" Cook to inform the New York Jets that he intends to retire(again) after 18 seasons.

Citing an e-mail sent by Favre, ESPN.com said Favre praised Jets management, inlcuding GM Mike Tannenbaum, owner Woody Johnson and former coach Eric Mangini. Favre said he had no regrets about retiring as a member of the Jets, rather than the Green Bay Packers, for whom he played 16 seasons.

Favre was very greatful to the Jets in his email and even mentioned by name two teammates who were critical of him after the season. "Mike and Woody, as well as the entire organization, have been nothing short of outstanding,'' Favre said in the email. "My teammatesThomas (Jones) and Kerry (Rhodes) included were a pleasure to play with. Eric (Mangini) could not have been any better. I enjoyed playing for him. My time with the Jets was short, but I'm honored to be given that chance.''

The question now is, not if Favre is retiring, but how long will it be before he un-retires again? Its going to be a long summer and Brett will have the opprotnuity to crash a whole bunch of high school practices before the start of training camp next season.

In a move that will further spread the speculation that Favre is not really retiring, ESPN reported Favre's agent had asked for his client to be released, but the Jets respectfully declined. Releasing Favre would have enabled him to pursue other options, without the Jets having to trade him. Requesting for his release could be an indication that Favre wants to keep his options open. He's rumored to be interested in the Vikings.

Well let the count down begin, how many days until Brett Favre un-retires... today is officially Day 1.
