Top 5 Remaining Free Agents - Alldayfootball.com's List of Forgotten Names

With the first week, and the initial burst of free agent signings out of the way, we are going to take a look at the remaining free agents available and where we think they might land....

  • 5) Sean Jones strong safety, Age 27, 6'1" 220lbs: Season Stats: 56 tackles, FF, 4 INTs and 4 Pass def. - Sean is a hard hitting strong safety with very good ball coverage skills, he had some injury concerns that limited him in his first few years in the NFL but he has risen to the occasion and become one of the more consistent and valuable young safeties in the league. When he was out of the lineup, the Browns really suffered as his range, presence and skills in both the pass and run game were pissed, he still has a lot of potential and at age 27 he is in his prime and looking to become a stout member of a new defense and it's very odd to see a safety of his caliber still available and getting as little recognition as he is. Jones would fit in nicely with the Atlanta Falcons who need a SS and it would be a homecoming for the former Georgia Bulldog.
  • 4) Jabari Greer, Age 27, 5'11" 180lbs: Season Stats 38 tackles, 2 INTs, 7 Pass def., 1 FF and 2 TDs- Greer is a solid man corner who has shown a real knack in getting to the ball, he has excellent ball skills and great speed, not to mention, he's dangerous once the ball is in his hands. Not only is he good in man coverage but with his skill set he could probably play zone as well, He will not likely return to Buffalo as the Bills recently added Drayton Florence to handle the Nickel corner duties. Greer would be a solid pick up for the defensively troubled Detroit Lions, giving new head coach Jim Schwartz a solid corner, like the ones he had in Tennessee.

  • 3)Tank Johnson defensive tackle, Age 27, 6'3" 305lbs: Season Stats: 22 tackles, 1 sack, FF - Johnson has an explosive first step and can be a disruptive force in the backfield. He can be an effective inside penetrator. He has above-average strength and athleticism. In recent years Johnson's productivity has struggled since he was jailed for off-the field issues and then playing out of position in Dallas' 3-4 alignment. Johnson is a true 4-3 DT and should find a team that will use his skill effectively. A team like Tampa Bay who recently lost out on a bidding war for Albert Haynesworth might be a good landing point as they are looking for defensive players and are not afraid to work with players who have character issues, see: Aqib Talib, Jeremy Stevens.

  • 2)Angelo Crowell linebacker, Age 27, 6'1" 246lbs: 2007 Season Stats (2008 on IR): 126 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 4 Pass def. - Angelo Crowell is an interesting player on this list, he is an extremely talented linebacker with great size and speed. The only problem is that Crowell's career has been sidelined by a series of injuries, if healthy nobody is doubting his talent and could easily make an impact in Washington who recently cut LB Marcus Washington.

  • 1)Leigh Bodden cornerback, Age 27 6'1" 193lbs: Season Stats: 73 tackles, 3 FF, 1 INT, 11 Pass def. - One of the top press corners in the NFL, it is shocking that Bodden's name has yet to be even mentioned for visits when teams are always looking for solid CB play. Leigh Bodden struggled last year in the 'Tampa 2' zone scheme run by former head coach Rod Marinelli. His size, speed and skill set would be attractive to any team in the NFL but Bodden would be an excellent addition to Jim Bates' press cover defense that he is installing in Tampa Bay, Ronde Barber may not fit the new system and their is uncertainty if Philip Buchanon will return.

Honourable mention:

Matt Birk center, Age 32, 6'4" 309lbs: Season Stats: 16 Games, 16 Starts Birk, the long time center of the Minnesota Vikings is an extremely smart player and a student of the game, he is getting a little older but can still offer a team a few more productive years. There is a definite possibility that Birk could resign with the Vikings, but he might be a nice fit in Baltimore as they recently lost their center Jason Brown to the St. Louis Rams.

** UPDATE** The Honourable mention member of this list needs one more mention, as Matt Birk has signed with theBaltimore Ravens.
