Hochstein Stays in New England Because He Likes How They Use Him

Russ Hochstein a back-up offensive lineman for the Patriots had a chance to depart the comforts of New England and potentially earn a starters role elsewhere via free agency this offseason, but opted to stay put.

A veteran of four Super Bowl squads, Hochstein's decision was partially influenced by the team's use of him in unusual ways. Hochstein was utilized in the team's Jumbo package and in goal line situations as either a tight end or a full back.

"Especially when you’ve been in the trenches so many years and you get to come out and do some different things." Hochstein says, he also admits that it is fun and he'd be willing to do it again.

The Patriots may just give the Nebraska product another chance in 2009, as both Mike Vrabel and Heath Evans, the other two players to play those positions, are no longer with the team.

Entering the ninth-year of his career, the 6'4" 305lbs Hochstein has started 12 games at guard, 10 games at center, two games at fullback and one game at tight end. He has spent the past seven seasons with the Patriots (2002-08) after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2001-02). Hochstein was originally a fifth round draft pick by Tamapa Bay in the 2001 NFL Draft.
