Before the start of free agency the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had the most cap space available an estimated $61 Million, had said they would make it a priority to retain their young core players.
GM Mark Dominik has already brought back, WR Antonio Bryant, WR Michael Clayton, S Will Allen, QB Luke McCown, and DT Ryan Sims, TE Jerremy Stevens, and WR Cortez Hankton, and after losing CB Phillip Buchanon to the Detroit Lions they did not want to lose SS Jermaine Phillips who they quickly re-signed. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Phillips, the Bucs 5th round choice in the 2002 draft has started 72 of his 94 career games and recorded 535 career tackles, three sacks, 11 interceptions, 34 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, in his seven seasons all with the Buccaneers.
At 6'2" and 220lbs, Phillips is known as a extremely solid and violent hitter, as evidenced by his two seperate forearm fractures, one resulting in a plate being inserted to repair the break. His time off allowed back-up Sabby Piscatelli a chance to earn experience and both are expected to compete for the starting position in training camp.
