NFL Pre-Season Power Rankings

#1 - Pittsburgh Steelers : Big Ben's Achilles is a concern but early reports is that he will be fine.

#2 - New England Patriots : Tom Brady got beat up in Cincy and struggled, but he got back up and kept playing, the blocking will improve and it will be Brady delivering the beatings soon.

#3: - Indianapolis Colts : After a slow start to the Pre-season Peyton Manning and the Colts are clicking and look dangerous.

#4: - San Diego Chargers : With a watered-down AFC West, the Chargers should breeze their way to division title ala 2008 Cardinals.

#5 - Minnesota Vikings : Favre was less than impressive in his pre-season debut once the regular season comes around if defenses stack 8-in-the-box to stop Peterson, Favre will burn you deep.

#6 - Baltimore Ravens : Joe Flacco is entering his second season in Baltimore. Because of his solid running game and devastating defense he will not be asked to win games on his own. His situation is very reminiscent of Ben Roethlisberger's second season in Pittsburgh, which by the way ended in a Super Bowl championship.

#7 - New York Giants : The defense is smothering, the running backs are dominating, unfortunately the recievers are troubling.

#8 - New Orleans Saints : Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is working on making the defense legit. QB Drew Brees has the offense rolling they will put up a bunch of points.

#9 - Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers is looking very sharp so far, and the defense is creating a ton of turnovers, Sleeper Alert!

#10 - Miami Dolphins : Jason Taylor is back from a one-year loan to Washington and plans to regain his old Dolphin form, AFC East beware.

#11 - Philadelphia Eagles : Will the addition of Michael Vick and the loss of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson motivate or distract?

#12 - Tennessee Titans : Kerry Collins is not getting any younger, but luckily for the Titans they have 3 solid backs to help him hide his age a little longer.

#13 - Chicago Bears: Jay Cutler makes this team instantly better, as long as he doesn't keep insulting his teammates "allegedly".

#14 - Arizona Cardinals : The window is closing on Kurt Warner and Super Bowl losers always rebound poorly.

#15 - Atlanta Falcons : Will QB Matt Ryan have a sophmore slump? Does future HoF TE Tony Gonzales have enough left in the tank to get his first playoff victory? The Falcons tough schedule should indicate no!

#16 - Carolina Panthers : RB DeAngelo Williams is solid in the backfield but his running mate Jonathan Stewart has struggled to stay healthy so far this offseason. The team does not want to have to rely on Jake Delhomme to win games as a passer anymore.

#17 - Dallas Cowboys : The Cowboys look like Super Bowl contenders so far, running hard, sharp passing, etc. But they always look thay way to start the season, we'll see how they look when they finish.

#18 - Seattle Seahawks : QB Matt Hasselback is healthy and he, along with T.J. Houshmanzadeh will try to bring the division title back to rainy Seattle.

#19 - Houston Texans : The Texans really need to break their 8-8 streak with a winning season, they may have the pieces to pull it off.

#20 - Washington Redskins : The spent a boatload on Albert Haynesworth whose presence will be felt of the defense, but may have ruined their quarterbacks confidence by chasing every available QB out there.

#21 - New York Jets : Rex Ryan is going to build a championship team, just not this season.

#22 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Bucs are super-fast on defense and improving on offense, but will start the season with two defensive starters serving suspension, never a good way to open the season.

#23 - Cincinnati Begals : The Bengals can be very explosinve on offense but haven't been so far. With little depth they are one injury away from another disasterous season.

#24 - San Francisco 49ers : Inconsistent QB-play and an under achieving defense will not get it done in the NFL. Did anyone else see the over-paid Nate Clements get burned by a rookie?

#25 - Jacksonville Jaguars : The Garrard-Williamson connection seems to be clicking, long rookie hold-outs do not help a struggling team.

#26 - Cleveland Browns : A dead heat thus far in a QB competition means you have two mediocre quarterbacks, someone needs to step up their game and carry this team.

#27 - Buffalo Bills : The Bills offensive line is a mess and it won't matter who they have at wide reciever if Trent Edwards is under a pile of defenders.

#28 - St. Louis Rams: Rams look a though they are making the appropriate steps to improve but it won't be a speedy turn-around.

#29 - Kansas City Chiefs : They traded for a one-hit wonder QB and signed him to a big contract this offseason and he may not even be their starter come opening day.

#30 - Denver Broncos : Things are a mess in Denver, lack of trust in the coaching staff, PR department mishaps

#31 - Oakland Raiders : The Raiders want to play smash mouth football, they just have to reming the head coach that its the opponents they want to smash and not defensive assistants.

#32 - Detroit Lions : Teammates fighting during pre-game warm ups are never a sign a team is improving.

The Cincinnati Bengals' kicker Shayne Graham may have some competition for his position in Cincy, there is a new kicker in town. Recently in a pre-season game between the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots, wide reciever Chad Ochocinco handled the kicking duties for the team while Graham was sidelined with an injury.

Not only booted the opening kickoff of the second half inside the 10-yard line, he also kicked an extra point following the game's only touchdown. Give Ocho credit; he drilled the extra point, almost as if he had been doing it his entire career.

Favre Watch Day 187

We Thought that we had shut down the "Favre Watch" for the summer after a month of total innactivity, but Favre is creeping back in to the news with this report from Jay Glazer from FoxSports.com.

If I were a betting man, I'd swear Brett Favre would be joining the Vikings in the next few weeks, or at least attempt to join the team in that time frame.
Wait a minute, I am a betting man.

Now, first off, this is not one of those "FOXSports.com has learned ..." news scoops. Instead, it's a picture that has been painted for me and a prediction I'm making after spending my time with Zygi Wilf's squad. My prediction couldn't be more emphatic.

After visiting the Vikings for two days, I am convinced — positively convinced — that Brett Favre will soon have talks with the Vikings to return to the team and could be joining them for this season after all. If my instincts are correct, all those purple Favre jerseys will have a home on Minnesota store shelves.

Granted, my camp stop occurred before Sage Rosenfels lit up the Colts in the preseason opener to the tune of 10-of-13 passing for 91 yards. And if Rosenfels can continue like this, he could squash this prediction as the preseason continues.

But until I see it more consistently, I'm absolutely convinced. Why? For starters, because everyone else on the Vikings seems to be convinced of the same thing. I mean damn near everybody!

During my two days in Mankato, nearly everyone I talked to within the team talked about Favre joining not as an "if" but rather a "when."

Players, coaches, team employees ... you name it, they seem to believe it. The case for a Favre-Vikings marriage seems more likely than not when we look at the overall picture of clues.

Exhibit A) Acceptance within the team that it's pretty much already done.

When I say nearly everyone I talked to on the team is convinced he's coming, that is not an exaggeration. People from all walks of life within the organization talk about it as if it's no secret, almost an afterthought.

"I'm telling you it's already done," said one Viking. "Right after the Indy game (first preseason game). I don't think anyone here doesn't think that."

Another Viking said, "I don't know if it's done, but I think he'll be in by the third preseason game."

If it happens, when is a good question. While the one source says he thinks it will happen this week, I don't. If it happens, getting him in by the third preseason game would have been ideal, but waiting until the season starts to see if the Vikings starting quarterback falters could be another route. That way Favre can come riding in on his white horse.

Our humble host of FOX NFL Sunday, Curt Menefee, also made the trip to camp when I did, and upon our exodus from Mankato, Menefee brought up how matter-of-fact the issue seemed to be around the club. Everyone acted as if they already knew something (even if they didn't) and even Menefee said he was floored by how open it seemed and how accepted it was as more than an opinion.

"It was crazy, it was like it was accepted as fact ... by everybody," said Menefee during a conversation while we were en route to the airport. "It wasn't even like it was a secret. I've never seen anything like it."

Exhibit B) Favre has not closed the door on his decision.

Those close to Favre told FOXSports.com he is still contemplating what he wants to do and is still eliciting advice from people he trusts regarding his decision. Those sources say his decision either way is far from set in stone.

Favre is still working out (at least according to what he's told others) and is still keeping in touch with members of the Vikings via text. If Favre wasn't planning to keep the door open or planning a full-on return, why would he have indicated that he would continue to throw and work out? Was that simply to make sure we all keep wondering and talking about a potential return?

Exhibit C) Best available option.

Neither Sage Rosenfels nor Tarvaris Jackson has done anything to make the Vikings feel either is the answer at quarterback. Jackson had been hurt this summer, but even when healthy he and Rosenfels have actually been outplayed during training camp by third-stringer John David Booty.

To listen to Brad Childress, one would think an open door to Favre would be in order. While I was at camp, Childress was quoted as being unhappy with the passing game. While he wanted more out of that phase of the offense, he was quick to point out that the receivers were doing well. So if the receivers are doing well but the passing game is struggling ... hmmm, who does that leave?

Exhibit D) Favre hates camp.

It's far from a secret that the NFL's version of Lou Gehrig dreads the rigors of living at a college campus, working out in the stifling sun with a bunch of kids who won't be in the league in three weeks. If he could miss camp, he would. In this case if the Vikings would take him back after camp, Favre gets his wish.

I think any NFL jury would award the verdict to a Favre return. However, while I may be completely convinced he will at least attempt to join the team now that camp has broken, the question that now arises: Will owner Zygi Wilf give Favre the go-ahead despite previously being spurned?

Some Vikings people vehemently attempted to convince me that the Vikings' ship has sailed to other waters. Childress has said they are fine with what the Vikings have. But until the final game of this season is played with no sign of No. 4 in sight, I'm not going to buy it.

The Vikings know they would be a better team with Favre at the helm. But some inside the organization believe the Wilfs could have been put off by how Favre Fiasco '09 unfolded. It dragged on past soap opera drama levels and in the end, they were left jilted at a very public altar.

However, I've got to believe that if Rosenfels and Jackson do nothing to conjure images of Fran Tarkenton, having Favre ride his mower up to the Twin Cities will begin to look awfully tempting to the Wilfs.

Again, I'm a betting man and if I had to lay a bet down right now ... I'd be willing to bet my farm.

Pre-Training Camp Power Rankings

1) Pittsburgh Steelers - The reigning champs have a nearly impoosible road ahead to a repeat, but they face a much easier schedule on paper then they faced last season.

2) New England Patriots - The team missed the playoff without Tom Brady, but he is back and appears to be healthy.

3) Baltimore Ravens - With Joe Flacco entering his second season teamed with that smothering defense is very reminiscent of Ben Roethlisberger's second season in Pittsburgh, which by the way ended in a Super Bowl championship.

4) New York Giants - The defense was good in 2008 but should be scary good with off-season additions, hopefully they will be able to find a replacement for Plaxico Buress.

5) San Diego Chargers - With a watered-down AFC West, the Chargers should breeze their way to division title ala 2008 Cardinals.

6) Indianapolis Colts - The loss of Tony Dungy will hurt, but with Peyton Manning and the offensive weapons they are always a contender.

7) Philadelphia Eagles - The team was one win away from the Super Bowl last season and made some nice offseason additions.

8) Tennessee Titans - Replacing the production of Albert Haynesworth is the key to the Titans success, a superior running game will keep the defense rested.

9) Chicago Bears - The addition of Jay Cutler will account for additional wins next season.

10) Carolina Panthers - With that running game they should be higher on this list, but with Jake Delhomme under center and uncertainty with Julius Peppers makes us worried.

11) Arizona Cardinals - Kurt Warner is back, Anquan Boldin is still there and Matt Leinart is maturing and will push Warner for playing time. But will they be able to shake off that devastating Super Bowl loss?

12) Minnesota Vikings - The Williams wall appears to be clear of legal troubles and Adrian Peterson is a beast.

13) Atlanta Falcons - The "Dirty Bird" shocked everyone last season, don't expect Matt Ryan and the Falcons to sneak up on anyone this season.

14) Miami Dolphins - Parcells and Sparano did a marvelous job in their first season with the team and Pat White will make the Wildcat even more dangerous.

15) Dallas Cowboys - I am not ready to by into the no T.O = no Drama non-sense, this team has struggled to win a playoff game long before Owens arrived.

16) New Orleans Saints - We all know how good the offense is and the defense looks better on paper, stop us if you've heard this before.

17) Green Bay Packers - Aaron Rodgers and the offense will be improved but how will the defense adjust to the scheme change?

18) Seattle Seahawks - Matt Hasselback is back and will attempt to steal back the division from the Cardinals.

19) Houston Texans - The Texans really need to break their 8-8 streak with a winning season, they may have the pieces to pull it off.

22) Cincinnati Bengals - Could be higher on this list by the end of the season, assuming the Palmer/Ochocinco sleepover goes well in July.

23) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - With what is expected to be an explosive offense and a shaky defense the Bucs may have entered "Bizzarro World".

24) Buffalo Bills - Terrell Owens needs to find his groove and a place to live soon or he will be an even bigger distraction in Western New York.

25) San Francisco 49ers - Mike Singletary will make them tougher, but without a QB they are at least another year away.

26) Jacksonville Jaguars - Will Maurice Jones-Drew be able to shoulder the load on offense without Fred Taylor and very inconsistent QB play? No longer the Super Bowl favorites they were just one year ago at this time.

27) Cleveland Browns - Unsettled at quarterback position aside, head coach Eric Mangini is banking on the same first-year success he had in New York. Don't get your hopes up.

28) St. Louis Rams - This team has a several positive pieces to work with but are a few years away from completing the puzzle.

29) Denver Broncos - It may be time for Owner Pat Bowlen to step in and stop the bleeding, Josh McDaniels is tearing this team apart from within.

30) Kansas City Chiefs - A one-hit wonder QB was brought in via trade, and a new regime is changing to a defensive scheme which does not the rosters strength troubles a brewing in Kansas City.

31) Oakland Raiders - Al Davis needs to step back and bring in a personnel evaluator before this team can improve.

32) Detroit Lions - The Lions will remain at the bottom until they register a notch in the win column.

For the 130th day of Favre watch I found this article by Bruce Ciskie @ NFL.Fanhouse.com

The Minnesota Vikings are still awaiting a final determination of Brett Favre's playing status for 2009. All indications are that they want him, and he wants them.

However, the potential of signing Favre this late in the offseason doesn't sit well with all the players, nor do stories of Favre's relationship with his teammates. Defensive end Ray Edwards has been the most outspoken on the matter, and he was at it again this week during a stop at ESPN headquarters.

While there, Edwards made it clear that Favre's presence would be a good thing, but then he was pressed to clarify, and he did.Q. I'm curious to whether you're being politically correct right here because there are a number of stories on the Internet that have you saying that most of the guys on the team do not want him as the team's QB.

A. "I never said we didn't want him. We just don't want him to bring his prima
donna attitude to our team. Because I feel that will break a team apart."

Q. What do you mean by prima donna attitude?

A. "Wanting your own locker room and not signing autographs for your teammates and things like that. That's kind of prima donna-ish to me."

Q. So if he does come in with not signing autographs and needs his own locker room how does that play out with you guys?

A. "I don't think it will divide the team but it will divide us from him. Having his back and things like that. Like I said, you've got to trust each other in this game we call football because it's not an individual sport. So him not having our trust [means] it will definitely be hard for us to trust him."

Give Edwards credit for honesty. Stories of Favre dressing separate from his teammates are out there, and virtually everyone is aware of this by now. While you wouldn't fashion it a big deal, Edwards obviously has a different opinion.

While Brad Childress might not have won Viking fans over with his coaching acumen, there is at least one important thing that he has undeniably done well in Minnesota.

He's brought the locker room together. This is a close-knit group of players. They believe in each other, and they do indeed have each other's backs. While it's hard to imagine Favre being a disastrous presence on this team, as long as they're winning, stuff like this is going to matter if the team isn't successful.

Our latest Favre Watch item is still centered around Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. It comes from Rick Alonzo from the Pioneer Press.

Brett Favre's agent said Friday he believes the quarterback's surgically repaired arm will be fine, but he's still not sure whether Favre wants to return to play football.

The comments came after ESPN.com reported that, according to an unidentified source, a Vikings trainer and a member of the coaching staff will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., in a few days to work with Favre. The Vikings want to gauge the progress of Favre's throwing arm after he had arthroscopic surgery last month to repair a partially torn biceps tendon.

Favre has started throwing footballs again, but apparently he's still uncertain whether he will be able to play this season.

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told West Virginia TV station WSAZ: "Whether he plays anymore or not, I don't know. . . . I don't know because I'm not sure that Brett is sure what he wants to do. Physically, I think he'll be fine, maybe a couple of weeks. But we will know one way or the other. Then again, does he still want to play?

"Can he play? Absolutely. He's still as good as anybody in the business, even at 40 years old. It's just whether or not he wants to go play or not."

Cook's comments that Favre should be healthy is just the latest strong indication that the future hall of famer is likely to sign with Minnesota.

Vikings coach Brad Childress was evasive when asked Thursday about wanting to see Favre throw before moving forward.

"I am not that anxious," to see Favre throw, Childress said. "I am not going to lose any sleep or anything. I don't need mood elevators or anything like that. But you always would want to see that, yeah."Asked whether the Vikings had plans to see Favre throw, Childress said: "Again, that is down-the-road stuff. The guy is retired right now and you would have to talk to him about that."

Childress restated Thursday that he did not impose a deadline of this week on Favre to decide whether to join the team, as ESPN.com had reported.

Childress declined to say how long he might be willing to let the Favre saga play out before making a final determination.

A Vikings spokesman said Friday the team would have no comment on the ESPN report.

Legendary Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton doesn't want Brett Favre to play for Minnesota, and he blasted the quarterback's play and attitude during a lengthy radio interview Tuesday.

"I think it's despicable," Tarkenton told 790 The Zone in Atlanta, according to sportsradiointerviews.com. "What he put the Packers through last year was not good. Here's an organization that was loyal to him for 17, 18 years, provided stability of organization, provided players.

"It just wasn't about Brett Favre. In this day and time, we have glorified the Brett Favres of the world so much, they think it's about them. He goes to New York and bombs. He's 39 years old. How would you like Ray Nitschke in his last year (playing for) the Vikings, or I retire and go play for the Packers? I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail."

Tarkenton ripped Favre for how he handled coming out of retirement for the first time last summer while he was with the Green Bay Packers. Favre retired and then changed his mind as the season approached. Tarkenton said Favre put himself above the team.

"He told the Packers, 'I'm retiring,' and they've got to move on," Tarkenton said. "... It's about team; it's not about Brett Favre. So he goes and runs up to the Jets, and he doesn't even dress in the locker room with the players, has a separate facility. Playing quarterback is about the relationships you have with your coaches, with your players, with you trainers, with your managers. How can you do that if you show up on game day and haven't put the time in? And now, he's trying to do it again in Minnesota. If Minnesota bites, God bless them."

Tarkenton said the Packers did everything they could to accommodate Favre last summer, and he criticized Favre for not being heavily involved in offseason workouts. Tarkenton also blasted Favre's play on the field.

"I think he has been a great, flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I've ever seen," Tarkenton said. "Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game against the Giants. He's playing against Eli Manning. I love Eli Manning, but he's still not a great quarterback. He's not Peyton (Manning) yet, or Tom Brady. He's just a guy. And they're (Packers) playing at home, and they're in a tight situation, they went to overtime and he (Favre) throws the interception that allows them (the Giants) to come back and win the game. ... He has done that and driven his coaches crazy all of his career."

Tarkenton said Favre treated Green Bay horribly last year and "now he wants to get revenge. Isn't that fun?"

As the second annual Brett Favre recontemplating retirement talks heat up, or what we at Alldayfootball like to call Favre Watch, more and more reports come out of Minnesota about how Favre will impact the Vikings, how Super Bowl ready they will be if Favre rode in on his tractor hung up his Wrangler Jeans and suited up for one more season.

The most recent installment has Minnesota's governor salivating at the thought of Brett Favre playing football for the Vikings. Gov. Tim Pawlenty says putting the former Green Bay Packer in purple would be fun for fans. He says it would be "a wonderful little salt to rub in the eyes of some of our Green Bay Packer friends."

Pawlenty laid out the scene: "Can you imagine Brett Favre going into Lambeau Field in Viking purple and maybe even wearing No. 4? There would be audible gasps. The would be 60,000 audible gasps."

The possibility of another unretirement seems to be getting closer as Favre is scheduled to meet with Vikings coach Brad Childress about a possible comeback with Minnesota. Childress will be flying down to Mississippi to enjoy some crawfish and Prilosec OTC and try to convince Favre that his arm isn't finished and it was simply the winds in Giants stadium that ruined the end of last season for Favre and the Jets.

The Associated Press is reporting that Brett Favre was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement.

When Favre was dealt to New York from Green Bay in August, there were conditions in the trade that required the Packers to be compensated if the Jets moved the three-time MVP. Those no longer apply if he signs elsewhere.

The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one disappointing season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.

"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum also said Favre had not indicated to him any desire to come back.

That, of course, won't stop any of the likely speculation that Favre could end up with any number of teams, especially if the torn biceps tendon that hampered him for much of last season has healed.

After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre had a tearful retirement in March 2008, but decided to return to football a few months later. Green Bay had already moved forward, anointing Aaron Rodgers the starter as a bitter falling out with Favre ensued.

The Packers traded him to the Jets, injecting excitement into a franchise that hasn't been to a Super Bowl since 1969. Things started off promising as Favre played well and the Jets took over first place in the AFC East, with a playoff run in their sights. But Favre struggled down the stretch with the arm injury as the Jets finished 1-4 and failed to make the playoffs, costing coach Eric Mangini his job.

Favre announced his retirement on Feb. 11, saying he was done with football -- this time for real.

Raheem Morris is Married to QB Josh Freeman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris just completed his first NFL Draft and with that came the selection of who he believes will be Tampa's "Franchise Quarterback", Morris has put the teams success and likely his employment in Tampa on the shoulders of the former Kansas State QB.

Morris has said in interviews that he is married to first round draft pick Josh Freeman.

From Cleveland.com You just knew the Brett Favre drama wasn't over.

The New York Jets have finally released Favre from their reserve/retired list, and while it isn't likely that Favre will return to the NFL as a player, with him, you just never know.

His agent Bus Cook told ESPN that Favre has no plans to end his retirement.

The Indianapolis Colts have signed center Kyle DeVan to a two-year contract, financials of the deal were not revealed. DeVan has most recently played for the Boise Burn an Arena Football team in Idaho.

DeVan left Boise for a tryout Monday, after the Burn's Saturday night loss to Spokane, and was signed Tuesday. DeVan spent part of the 2008 season on the Jets practice squad.

Patriots Re-Sign LB Pierre Woods

The New England Patriots re-signed linebacker Pierre Woods today. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Woods, 27, is entering his fourth season with the Patriots after being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2006 draft. The former Michigan Wolverine has played in 36 games with three starts for the Patriots over three NFL seasons (2006-08).

The 6-foot-5-inch, 250-pound linebacker has recorded 31 career tackles, including one sack, and has totaled 44 career special teams tackles. Last season, Woods played in 12 games with three starts and tallied a career-best 27 tackles, and added a sack.

He made his first career start at outside linebacker against the New York Jets this past November where he had a career-high nine tackles in that game while recording his first career sack. He also started the following two games before being placed on injured reserve with a jaw injury on Dec. 14.

As a rookie in 2006, Woods made New England’s opening day roster as an undrafted free agent and finished fourth on the team with 11 special teams tackles while seeing action in eight games.

Chiefs Sign TE Ryan

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed tight end Sean Ryan, details of the contract were not disclosed.

Ryan, has appeared on several NFL team rosters over his five-year career, he has played in 43 games with San Francisco, New Orleans, Miami, the Jets and Dallas. He spent time with the 49ers, Saints and Dolphins in 2008, catching a total of three passes for 15 yards.

For his career, Ryan has 12 catches for 105 yards and no touchdowns.

In other news, the Chiefs also waived offensive tackle Andrew Carnahan, linebacker Curtis Gatewood and wide receiver Kevin Robinson.

William 'The Refrigerator' Perry in Serious Condition in South Carolina Hospital

According to the Chicago Sun Times, William “The Refrigerator” Perry — the former defensive lineman who captured the hearts of Chicago Bears fans in 1985 when he rumbled for a one-yard touchdown in his Monday Night Football debut — is in serious condition in a South Carolina hospital after suffering from symptoms of a chronic illness.

A relative said he is expected to recover.

The 46-year-old Perry, who resides in his native Aiken, S.C., was diagnosed last June with Guillain-Barré syndrome and hospitalized for five months. He used a wheelchair during his rehabilitation.

Purnell Perry told the Sun-Times in a phone interview that his uncle entered the hospital more than a week ago because of complications related to the illness, and is expected to make a full recovery.

“They were making sure he was in pretty good health before they started treating him,” said Purnell Perry.

A spokeswoman for Aiken Regional Medical Center said Perry is in serious condition, but declined to elaborate.

There is no cure for Guillain-Barré syndrome, but treatments are available that can ease the symptoms and duration.

Perry played ten seasons in the NFL — eight of them with the Bears and two with the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned the nickname “The Refrigerator” for his intimidating 6-foot-2, 350-pound frame. He won a Super Bowl ring his rookie year with the 1985 Bears, scoring a touchdown in the game.

Jon Gruden Thinks His Former Team Should Go Defense First in This Weekends Draft

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden thinks that his former team should go defense with the 19th overall pick this weekend.

Gruden spoke about the Bucs needs when he took part in an NFL Draft conference call today along with former San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci.

Draft experts like ESPN's Mel Kiper has said he believes the Buccaneers should consider drafting Kansas State QB Josh Freeman, but Gruden believes that defensive line is a much bigger problem, and if Gruden, a known QB collector says the Bucs need a defensive lineman over a quarterback you'd better believe him.

"I really think Tampa Bay lost some key players on defense and they struggled down the stretch last season on defense," Gruden said. "Let's be honest. For whatever reason, and most of that obviously was the head coach's inability to get it going.

"Kevin Carter [free agent] is still out there. I think Greg White, Stylez White, he obviously had a disappointing sophomore season. This is a big year for Gaines Adams in a new scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if they do target a defensive end."

Many people believe that the Buccaneers next option after Freeman is defensive tackle, namely Ole Miss' Peria Jerry, but Gruden isn't sold.

"I think everybody down here [Tampa] expects them to draft a defensive tackle. I just don't know if that player is there for them in the first round," Gruden said. "I don't know if that kind of guy is in this draft other than the [B.J.] Raji kid at Boston College. I know Jerry at Ole Miss, he's not as big as the guy [6-foot-2, 290 pounds] maybe Jim Bates [Bucs defensive coordinator] has played with in the past in Miami.

"Ziggy Hood [Missouri defensive tackle], similar. I just don't know if that guy fits what the Bucs really want and need at No. 19."

Ravens Think Asking Price for Boldin Too Steep

According to Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun, the Baltimore Ravens have unofficially taken themselves out of the running for WR Anquan Boldin, claiming the price is too high to acquire the Pro Bowl receiver. Apparently, the Cardinals are looking to receive a 1st round pick along with a 3rd round selection in return for Boldin’s services.

The Ravens are trying to secure a premier wide receiver for Joe Flacco to throw to next season, but are hesitant about parting with multiple draft picks to land Boldin in a deal with Arizona. They would not mind sending a player along with a single selection, but the Cardinals have not shown much interest in that proposal as of yet.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jason Webb has signed his one-year tender offer to remain with the club.

Webb caught five passes last season for 46 yards. He has caught 36 passes for 382 yards with one touchdown in 31 games during his three-year career with the Chiefs. Webb mainly contributes on special teams where he has returned 17 kickoffs for 373 yards (21.9 average) and has 14 special team tackles.

The Chiefs took him as a sixth-round pick (190th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Falcons' RB Snelling Jailed on Traffic Charges

Atlanta Falcons running back Jason Snelling, 25, was arrested by Gwinnett police, on April 11, alleging the third-year running back was driving without insurance and wanted on a failure to appear warrant.

According to the report, an officer was stopped at a traffic light behind Snelling's 2007 Lincoln Navigator on Ga. Highway 20 when he "randomly ran the tag," which indicated the vehicle was not insured, according to a police report.

The background check revealed that Snelling was wanted on failure to appear warrants in Lawrenceville, stemming from an April 2008 arrest for driving with a suspended license and failing to have a Georgia tag after 30 days, according to the report and jail records.

Snelling claimed he is current on insurance payments and that he had paid the traffic fines, which was later confirmed when a Gwinnett Recorder's Court representative said Snelling's earlier case was closed after he paid the traffic fines in April last year.

In the most recent arrest, Snelling spent eight hours at the Gwinnett County Jail before posting $1,400 bond. Falcons management inked an exclusive rights contract last month with Snelling. The team drafted him from Virginia in the seventh round of the 2007 draft.

WR Hurd Re-Signs in Dallas

Restricted free agent Sam Hurd, has signed his one-year, $1.54 million tender and will return to the Dallas Cowboys next season.

Hurd suffered a high ankle sprain in the final preseason game against Minnesota and began the season on the inactive list. He missed the first three games of the regular-season, but returned to the lineup against Washington. He played the next 3 games before re-injuring the ankle on a special teams play. He had surgery on Oct. 14 and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 16 and missed the remainder of the season.

In three seasons, Hurd has 24 receptions for 389 yards and one touchdown. He originally signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent and made the roster as a rookie in 2006.

Torry Holt Signs 3-Year Deal in Jacksonville

Former St. Louis Rams wide receiver Torry Holt agreed to a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday that could be worth as much as $20 million.

The 32-year-old Holt agreed to a incentive laiden contract that grows financially based on the way he plays. The deal, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton, calls for three years with base salaries totaling $13 million. While there is no signing bonus, the first year of the contract is guaranteed.

Holt drew interest from several teams, but decided on Jacksonville, who have been searching for a number 1 receiver since the retirement on long-time Jaguar WR Jimmy Smith in 2006. The Jaguars have added several wide receivers over the last few years with very limited success. Reggie Williams (2004) and Matt Jones (2005) were added via the first round of the draft and Jerry Porter (2008) was brought in as a free agent, all were released this off-season.

The seven-time Pro Bowler ranks 11th on the NFL's career list with 869 receptions. He caught 64 passes for 796 yards and three touchdowns for St. Louis last season.

Thigpen 'Not Ok' with Being Backup in Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs made a high-profile trade with the New England Patriots for quarterback Matt Cassel, very early in free agency, it is assumed that he will be QB1 this season for the Chiefs. Incumbent starter Tyler Thigpen is "not ok" with the demotion and isn't ready to give up his starting role so easily.

Thigpen said after the Chiefs’ final game that he thought he had done enough to begin the 2009 season as the team’s starting quarterback. Over the weekend Thigpen was running the second team offense while Cassel led the first team offense. So by early appearances Thigpen is buried on the depth chart once again, but he’s willing to trust coaches’ judgment and hopes he’ll get a chance at the starting job.

“It’s life,” Thigpen said Sunday. “Everything happens for a reason. You may not see the reason right now, but I know there’s a reason that they brought a guy in like Matt. I’m behind him, and all I’m doing is pushing him, making him better. Hopefully me doing that is going to make this team better.”

Thigpen has been in this situation before, he began last season as the No. 3 quarterback and wound up starting 11 games after Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard suffered season-ending injuries. Thigpen passed for 18 touchdowns and seemed to grow more comfortable after a few early-season struggles.

"Unless you come from a high-profile college, you’re always the underdog,” Thigpen said. “I’m back in that situation again. I don’t mind in that situation.”

Panthers Re-Sign Two Restricted Free Agents

Edgerrin James' Longtime Girlfriend Dies of Leukemia

The long time girlfriend of Edgerrin James and mother of his four children died of leukemia on Tuesday.

Andia Denise Wilson, 30, died at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa after battling acute myeloid leukemia. James, who plays for the Arizona Cardinals, is listed as Wilson's "loving spouse and significant other'' in an obituary notice. James and Wilson had four children: Edquisha, 11, Ehyanna, 7, Edgerrin Jr., 4, and Euro, 2.

Pierre Rutledge, head of the Edgerrin James Foundation, said the family would not be doing any interviews this week but would like to invite people to attend the funeral to honor Wilson's life.

A funeral service and celebration of Wilson's life will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Naples, 3000 Orange Blossom Drive in North Naples. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday, prior to the service, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Interment will be private.

ESPN Adds Ex-Lions Boss Millen

Former Lions GM Matt Millen, who has the distinction of being the GM who helped lead the Detroit Lions to the only 0-16 season, will be joining the ESPN team as a lead NFL and College Football analyst.

Ronnie Brown on the Trading Block?

The Miami Dolphins put together an epic turn-around for their franchise in 2008, following a season where they went 1-15 the Dolphins wildcatted their way to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.

One of the main reasons for their success in '08 was the play of running back Ronnie Brown, but Michael Lombardi of nationalfootballpost.com is reporting that Brown does not fit Dan Henning's offense and the Dolphins "might be interested" in shopping his services.

Brown is signed through 2010, at base salaries of $3.6 million this year and $5 million next year. If the Dolphins were to move Brown this may be the time as his stock couldn't be hotter, following his performance last season.

In 2008, Brown rushed for 916 yards and 10 TD's while splitting time with Ricky Williams, he was also the centerpiece of the Dolphins' "Wildcat" offense, which took the league by storm.

If a trade were to take place, the Dolphins would need to find a replacement for Brown, likely a mid-round pick, or perhaps West Virginia QB Pat White, who would an excellent hybrid/wildcat type player.

Holt Close to Catching on in Jacksonville

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Jacksonville Jaquars are close to closing a deal with former St. Louis Rams WR Torry Holt.

The St. Louis Rams released Holt on March 13 shortly before he was due a $1.25 million roster bonus on March 17.

Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, ranks 11th on the league's all-time reception list with 869 catches.

The 10-year veteran caught just 64 passes last year for 796 yards and three touchdowns, the fewest scoring catches of his career. His total receptions and total yards were the second-lowest of his career, ahead of only his rookie season of 1999.

The move to Jacksonville makes sense as the team recently released WR's Jerry Porter and Matt Jones.

Bigby Signs Tender will Remain a Packer

Green Bay Packers safety Atari Bigby, a restricted free agent, signed his one-year tender with the team and is now under contract. His one-year deal is worth $1.545 million. A team would have had to be willing to give up a second-round pick to sign him away from Green Bay.

Bigby was an undrafted player in 2005. After failing to make the Dolphins and Jets in 2005, he landed with the Packers that year and found home. He started 22 games at safety over the past two years.

His best season came in 2007 when he started all 16 games and collected 86 tackles and 5 interceptions. In 2008 Bigby was held back because of injuries and eventually ended up on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.

Rams Retain Two Restricted Free Agents

The restricted free agent deadline came and went Friday night and the St. Louis Rams will retain two more RFAs who received no offers from other teams.

Defensive end Victor Adeyanju has signed his one-year tender worth $1.01 million. Offensive guard/center Richie Incognito is expected to sign his $1.01 million tender sometime next week.

Adeyanju, who is entering his 4th season in the NFL, has amassed 101 career tackles and 3 sacks in 43 games with 25 starts.

Incognito, who is entering his 5th season, was redshirted in his rookie year but has played in 35 games all starts.

As in any other restricted free agents, if they had received outside offers, the Rams would have one week to match the offer.

Eagles, LT Peters Agree to New Six-Year Extension

The Philadelphia Eagles didn't waste any time satisfying the needs of their newest addition. Shortly after completing the trade with the Buffalo Bills, the team announced that they have agreed to a new six-year contract with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters.

Peters passed a physical at the Eagles’ training complex, and team officials immediately began on a new deal with Peters’ agent, Eugene Parker.

"Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football,” said head coach Andy Reid. “He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film. I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”

The 27-year-old Peters garnered back-to-back Pro Bowl and Associated Press All Pro honors following the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. He originally joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2004, Peters entered the NFL as a tight end after playing that position at Arkansas. Because of his unique combination of athleticism and size, the Bills began grooming Peters for the offensive line while using him as a blocking tight end.

Peters played the hybrid blocking tight end/offensive lineman role for most of his first two seasons. In 2006, he started all 16 games on the offensive line, switching to left tackle for the final nine contests.

UPDATE: ESPN is reporting that Peters’ extension is worth $53 million in new money with a total of $60 million over the next six seasons.

NFL Changes Time of Jets Game on Yom Kippur

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The NFL has moved up the start time of the New York Jets' game against the Tennessee Titans on September 27 after the team complained to the league about having to play home games on consecutive Jewish holidays.

The league made the change Friday, rescheduling the 4:15 start to 1 p.m. a day after Jets owner Woody Johnson sent a letter to commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting the switch to allow fans to arrive home before sundown on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

The Jets' home opener against New England is 1 p.m. on Sept. 20, which falls during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

"By changing the time of the Tennessee game from 4:15 p.m. to 1 p.m., the NFL has provided the best compromise to resolve our scheduling conflict," Johnson said in a statement issued by the team. The Jets owner also thanked Goodell and Howard Katz, the league's senior vice-president of broadcasting and media operations, for their prompt response.

Jets officials called the league offices first on Wednesday to express their concern, and Johnson followed with a formal letter Thursday.

In the letter to Goodell, Johnson wrote: "There has long been an understanding that neither the Jets nor the Giants fans should have to bear completely the brunt of this issue since we are in the largest Jewish market in the country."

Rep. Anthony Weiner, a U.S. congressman who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, also sent a letter to Goodell on Friday urging the league to accommodate the Jets' Jewish fans.

"This commonsense solution is a win for everyone involved," Weiner said, praising the league's decision. "The NFL can maximize the greatest audience while Jewish New York Jets fans can support their team and respect their religion."

As a result of the schedule change, the Titans-Jets and Giants-Buccaneers games will be televised head-to-head on different networks. The Giants are on the road for both Jewish holidays, with a game at Dallas at 8:20 p.m. in Week 2, and the game at Tampa, Fla., the following Sunday.

The Denver Broncos have signed unrestricted free agent OT Brandon Gorin. The deal is believed to be for one year, but the financials were not released.

The versatile offensive lineman is capable of playing right or left tackle, but likely will back up RT Ryan Harris.

Gorin (6-foot-6, 308 pounds) is an ninth-year player who joins the Broncos after stints with St. Louis (2007-08), Arizona (2006), New England (2002-06) and San Diego (2001). He entered the NFL with the Chargers in 2001 as a seventh-round selection (201st overall)

The former Purdue Boilermaker has appeared in 49 games with 26 starts and seven postseason contests inclusding 5 starts in his career.

LenDale White Slimming Down

Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White, who lost his starting spot to rookie RB Chris Johnson, is getting himself ready to battle and take it back. His first step is coming into camp in better shape.

White's other motivation? It's his contract year, so if he is not going to be the starter in Tennessee, he wants to get paid big somewhere else.

Christopher Brantley, who represents White, acknowledges that certainly White wants to do well as he enters the final year of his rookie contract, but said White’s motivation stems more from wanting to prove his professionalism than anything else.

“Everybody in that final year gears up to put their best foot forward, but whether it’s a contract year or not, he’s been getting a lot of flack about his weight and his work ethic, and he just wants to set the record straight on all that,” Brantley said. “He wants to show that he’s a solid professional and a good back in the NFL, and when he’s been given the opportunity, he produces.”

White, who showed up to last years off-season workout program at a bulky 270lbs, signed in this season at a much slimmer 238lbs. Although still big for a running back is a drastic improvement from previous years.

“Before he went down to work out, he was home back in Denver working out with his uncle who helps him get ready and did so when he was in school [at Southern California],” Brantley said. “There are certain drills and programs that they do to get ready, and he kind of wanted to go home and get back to basics and be really ready to go when the program started.”

Ravens Might Make a Play for Boldin

Jamison Hensley of The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens expressed interest in acquiring wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the Arizona Cardinals.

The asking price to aquire Boldin is apperently a first and third rounder, who would bring at 6 feet 1, 217 pounds a tall, talented receiver for young QB Joe Flacco.

This is the third time in five years the Ravens have considered trading for a wide receiver. Their trade for Terrell Owens in 2004 was rescinded, and the team failed to complete a deal for Randy Moss in 2005.

Boldin, 28, would be attractive to the Ravens because they couldn't draft a proven receiver like him with the 26th overall pick.

Boldin has two years remaining on a six-year, $33.99 million deal, but he is seeking a new contract. He feels he is underpaid and wants a new deal on par with the contract signed by teammate Larry Fitzgerald (four years, $40 million) that nearly doubled Boldin's average annual salary.

The other teams that could pursue Boldin are the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and New York Jets, according to ESPN.

Bills Trade Peters to Eagles

The Buffalo Bills have traded Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

In exchange for Peters, the Bills receive the Eagles’ 28th overall pick of the first round as well as a second-day draft pick in this year’s draft and a late-round draft pick in 2010.

Peters, is entering year two of his contract beef with the Bills, and hasn’t been attending the Bills’ offseason activities after staging a holdout last summer at training camp.

The Cincinnati Bengals have re-sign retricted free agent LB Brandon Johnson, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Johnson filled in admirably at weakside linebacker after Keith Rivers got his jaw broke during an Oct. 19the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We knew Brandon had good potential, but the way he came on last season was a very pleasant surprise,” Bengals linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald said. “His production was outstanding. He proved himself as a player that you definitely want on the field, and we are glad to have him back.”

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound fourth-year veteran from Louisville who started his career with the Arizona Cardinals, had a breakout season in 2008, his first year with the club.

Johnson finished second on the team with 112 tackles, but averaged 10 tackles per game over the last nine weeks of the season, all starts.

Lions Sign Curry and Smith

The Detroit Lions said that they wanted to sign their top draft prospect before the draft began, and in typical Lions fashion they came close but not quite right. Wake Forest's LB Aaron Curry and Baylor's OT Jason Smith are two of the top prosepects but that is not who the Lions signed.

The Detroit Lions have added two more unrestricted free agents, with the announcement of WR Ronald Curry, and FB Terrell Smith signing contracts today, terms were not released on the contracts.

Curry, is listed at 6'2" and 210lbs, he spent the last seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders collecting 193 catches for 2,347 yards and 13 TD's. HE joins the Lions depth chart with Calvin and Bryant Johnson (not related).

Smith, is a 6' 246lbs fullback, he spent the last 2 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He has 58 carries for 185 yards, and 67 catches for 354yard and 3 touchdowns, but is a bruising lead blocker.

This maybe be the Lions way of telling everyone they intend to sign Georgia QB Matthew Stafford by getting the Curry and Smith signings out of the way first.

Texans' Ryan Will Report

Houston Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans has been avoiding the teams off-season conditioning program, but will report for the team voluntary workouts which begin Monday.

Ryans, who has one-year remaining on his contract has snubbed the team thus far, because he is upset that a long-term contract extension has not been reached yet.

"He's coming to town and he is going to be there Monday and is ready to play football in 2009," said Ryans' agent Ben Dogra in an interview with FOX 26 Sports in Houston.

Dogra, who was recently hired by Ryans, said he has yet to discuss his client's contractual situation with the Texans.

"I have not spoken to the Texans yet. They are in draft meetings right now. I will speak with (general manager) Rick Smith at the appropriate time."

The former 2nd round choice and Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 has definately earned an extension, in 3 seasons he has put up 396 tackles, 6.5 sacks along with 2 interceptions.

49ers Extend Nedney Too

On the same day they extended OLB Parys Haralson, the San Francisco 49ers have also extended another consistent producer, kicker Joe Nedney. The 36-year old has been re-signed through 2011, financial terms were not released.

Nedney, entering his 14th season, has made nearly 88 percent of his field-goal attempts since coming to the 49ers in 2005. Last season, he converted 29 of 33 field goal tries and led the team in scoring with 121 points.

The San Jose native has made 101 of 115 field goals with the 49ers, his seventh NFL team since coming to the league out of San Jose State in 1995

Steelres Release Gary Russell

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released "short-yardage specialist" Gary Russell, who scored the first touchdown for the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.

Russell made the Steelers as an undrafted rookie in 2007 and became their short-yardage running back midway through the 2008 season. He rushed for 77 yards on 28 carries last season and scored three touchdowns.

His most memorable touchdown, came in the second quarter of the Super Bowl when he ran one yard for a touchdown to give the Steelers a 10-0 lead. His only other carry in that game resulted in a 4-yard loss.

He also scored a touchdown from one yard out in the fourth quarter of the Steelers' 35-24 playoff victory against San Diego.

The Steelers gave no reason for his release.

49ers Extend Haralson

John Madden Retires

NEW YORK – John Madden is retiring from football announcing, where his enthusiastic, down-to-earth style made him one of sports' most popular broadcasters for three decades. The Hall of Fame coach spent the last three seasons on NBC's "Sunday Night Football." His final telecast was the Super Bowl in February.

"You know at some point you have to do this — I got to that point," Madden said on his Bay Area radio show Thursday. "The thing that made it hard is not because I'm second guessing, `is it the right decision?' But I enjoyed it so damn much.

"I enjoyed the game and the players and the coaches and the film and the travel and everything."

Cris Collinsworth will replace Madden, moving over from the network's studio show, NBC Sports chief Dick Ebersol said. Collinsworth filled in when Madden took a game off last October.

Ebersol called Madden "absolutely the best sports broadcaster who ever lived."
Madden said his health is fine, but at the age of 73, he wanted to spend more time with his family. His 50th wedding anniversary is this fall, and his five grandchildren are old enough to notice when he's gone.

"If you hated part of it or if something was wrong, it'd be easy," Madden said.
Madden's blue-collar style and love for in-the-trenches football endeared him to fans. His "Madden NFL Football" is the top-selling sports video game of all time.
Madden is reluctant to fly and often traveled to games in a specially equipped bus.

Longtime broadcast partner Al Michaels said Madden will have a unique place in pro football history.

"No one has made the sport more interesting, more relevant and more enjoyable to watch and listen to than John," Michaels said in a statement. "There's never been anyone like him and he's been the gold standard for analysts for almost three decades."

Madden began his pro football career as a linebacker coach at Oakland in 1967 and was named head coach two years later, at 33 the youngest coach in what was then the American Football League.

Madden led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory and retired in 1979. He joined CBS later that year.

He worked at CBS until 1994 when the network lost rights to broadcast NFL games, leading him to switch to Fox. He left Fox in 2002 to become the lead analyst for ABC's "Monday Night Football" and joined NBC in 2006 when that network inaugurated a prime-time Sunday game.

Madden said that for the last several years, he waited until two months after the season to determine whether to continue, not wanting to rush into a decision. He surprised Ebersol when he told him last week he was retiring.

Ebersol flew to California on Wednesday morning and spent 11 hours with Madden, trying to persuade him to change his mind. Ebersol even offered to allow Madden to call games only in September and November and to take October and December off.

"I knew right away there was no way of talking him out of it," Ebersol said. "I knew in his voice he really thought about this."

Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

"There is one thing football fans have agreed on for decades: they all love John Madden," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "John was a Hall of Fame coach before becoming one of the most-celebrated personalities in sports. He had an incredible talent for explaining the game in an unpretentious way that made it more understandable and fun.

"Since not a whole lot has changed with his contractual situation, we know that will come back. It would be foolish from out standpoint not to listen to those opportunities and see what actually exists. But I want to make the points — our goal is to re-sign him to a long-term deal. That hasn't changed."

Ex-Colts Running Back is Hitting the Rhodes, Visiting Bills

Dominic Rhodes, a free agent running back who played last season for the Indianapolis Colts, spent Monday and Tuesday visiting with officials from the Buffalo Bills.

"It went well,'' Todd France, Rhodes' agent, said

Rhodes rushed for 538 yards and a team-high six touchdowns in 2008 while splitting time with starter Joseph Addai. He also ranked fifth on the team with 45 receptions for 302 yards and three TDs.

Except for the 2007 which he spent with the Oakland Raiders, the nine-year pro has played his entire career in Indy, whom he joined as an undrafted free agent following the 2001 draft.

The Colts have not ruled out the possibility of re-signing Rhodes, because he is so productive in the tandem with Addai.

Texans Okoye May Need MRI

Houston Texans DT Amobi Akoye, a first round pick from 2007, has been suffering from some soreness in his left knee and he may require an MRI.

Okoye said he has developed soreness in his knee while running in the Texans’ conditioning program.

"There's a little soreness there," he said. "Hopefully, it's nothing big. We’re taking a look at it. Going out there and running, it's not really inhibiting me, but I can feel a little bit of soreness. I’ll take it day by day and see if it gets worse or if it gets any better. I wouldn't necessarily say it's worrisome. Let's hope it doesn't get worrisome."

"We’ll do whatever needs to be done for Amobi to be successful,” Kubiak said. “All of our guys are sore right now because they’ve been working so hard in the conditioning program for eight or nine days.”

Okoye said he plans to wait two weeks to see if the soreness goes away. If not, he’ll get the MRI to see if there’s any damage.

"I went to the doctor, and he took a look at it and said it's nothing to worry about right now," Okoye said. "I hope it stays that way."

The Texans have invested heavily in their defensive line and are hoping that Okoye's knee pain isn't a chronic problem. It may be worrisome as Okoye's play fell off significantly, as he suffered a sophmore slump. As a 20-year old rookie Okoye put up 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks but last season only managed 24 tackles to go with 1 sack and missing 2 games due to injury.

Jets Close to Training Camp Decision

According to a league official with knowledge of the team's thinking, the New York Jets are closing in on SUNY Cortland as their training camp site, . The Jets, who have built a state-of-the-art $75 million facility in Florham Park, will not hold their training camp there because new coach Rex Ryan wants his team to train in an isolated area, to build team chemistry and to eliminate distractions.

SUNY Cortland, located about four hours from New York City, has air-conditioned dorms and two full-sized Fieldturf fields. It also has additional grass fields. This location was also a finalist for the Giants training camp who eventually landed in Albany.

The Jets moved to the Florham Park facility after spending the past 40 years at Hofstra, where they also held their training camp. Despite a move of training camps, the Jets have said they still plan to hold community events at Florham Park and Hofstra before the season starts.

Jones-Drew Gets His Extension

Michael C. Wright from the Florida Times-Union is reporting that Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew agreed to terms today on a long-term contract extension.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available, but the club plans to announce the move today during a press conference at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Jones-Drew regards himself as an elite running back and it appears as though he will be paid like one. It is speculated that his contract will pay him approx. $8 Million per year with $20 Million guaranteed.

Jones-Drew's agent, Adisa Bakari, is using the six-year, $49.3 million deal ($29.3 million in the first four years) signed by St. Louis running back Steven Jackson as the baseline for his possible extension.

Carlos Dansby Goes to France

A day after Byron Leftwich signed on to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Pittsburgh Steelers moved quickly to plan B and have retained Charlie Batch.

John Clayton of ESPN.com is reporting that Batch agreed to a one-year, $895,000 deal, according to a source, including a $50,000 signing bonus.
Batch, 34, is entering his 11th season, his seventh with the Steelers.

A native of Pittsburgh, Batch joined the Steelers in 2002, after 4 seasons in Detroit where he a full time starter. Since arriving in Pittsburgh he has played in 22 games, including four starts.

Redskins Golston Signs Tender

Buccaneers Team Doctor to Retire

Our friends at pewterreport.com are telling us that long-time Buccaneers physician Dr. Joe Diaco, who has been with Tampa Bay since its inaugural season in 1976, will retire this week after 33 seasons with the team.

“This is a very difficult decision for me because I love the Buccaneers and I love working for the Glazers,” said Diaco. “The Glazer family has been nothing but kind and generous to me and my family. I leave with a heavy heart but this will allow me to work with my son in his practice and more importantly, spend more time with my children and my grandchildren.”

Diaco practiced general and laparoscopic surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, where he served as chief of surgery and staff for a decade. He saw the Bucs at the worst and best, including Super Bowl XXXVII during Tampa Bay’s 2002 season.

“Dr. Diaco has been an important fixture in this organization since its inception, and he will be missed,” said Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik. “We are truly indebted to him for his tireless dedication over the last 33 years, and wish him all the best in retirement.”

Dr. John Zvijac will continue to serve as Tampa Bay’s orthopedic surgeon while Dr. Chat Janecki and Dr. Dan Lamar serve as team associate orthopedic surgeons.

Giants Dockery Signs Tender

Cornerback Kevin Dockery signed a one-year free agent tender for $1.54 million on Monday, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday.

The 25-year-old who starred in college at Mississippi State had 36 tackles and an interception in 13 games last season, he also returned a blocked field goal 71 yards for a touchdown in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in December.

Dockery had until the end of the week to sign the offer. The Giants tendered Dockery, a restricted free agent, at a second-round level.

Dockery joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He has been a backup to Corey Webster and Aaron Ross the past two seasons.

Report: Chiefs Reject Falcons Trade Offer

Frank Boal of Fox4 in Kansas City is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have rejected the Falcons trade offer for pro bowl TE Tony Gonzalez. The offer was a seconf round pick (no. 55 overall).

The Chiefs are apperently years away from being a contender and Gonzalez wants to play for a competitive squad, he has apperently already cleaned out his locker. Gonzalez is doing everything he can to get out of town but the Chiefs are struggling to let him slip away.

Harrison's Contract Extension with Steelers Complete

ESPN.com's John Clayton is reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers and linebacker James Harrison have agreed on a six-year, $51.175 million dollar contract extension.

The NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year will reportedly receive $20 million in guaranteed money, and will now be signed through the 2014 season.

The 31-year old Harrison, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Kent State in 2002 and bounced around the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens' roosters before becoming a full-time starter for the Steelers in 2007.

Although this is a nice deal for a former undrafted free agent, his guaranteed money is exrtremely low, when you look at pass rushers Dwight Freeney and Jared Allen both received $30 Million guaranteed and Albert Haynesworth got $41 Million guaranteed. Considering his impact to the team and his defensive player of the year status the Steelers certainly got themselves a steal on this contract.

Over the last two seasons, Harrison has started 31 games, made 199 tackles, snarred a pair of interceptions and registered 24.5 quarterback sacks. Harrison also returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the Steelers' 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Bills Dropping Ticket Prices for Toronto Series

Ticket prices to see the Buffalo Bills in Toronto have been dropped by an average of 17 per cent for this coming season, including more than 11,000 seats that will be available at less than $100.

Two things that have occurred over the past several months influenced the change: the economic downturn and negative feedback received on pricing from fans who attended the first two games of Bills Toronto Series last season.

“During the off-season we asked our customers for feedback on the Bills Toronto Series. This price adjustment, developed in conjunction with the NFL and the Bills, is a result of that feedback,” said Phil Lind, vice-chairman of Rogers Communications Inc. “Sports leagues and teams around the world are taking similar steps to make their products more accessible. We are conscious of these challenging economic times and are more committed than ever to providing Toronto sports fans with an outstanding NFL experience.”

The Bills played one preseason and one regular-season game in Toronto during 2008. The pre-season game was so under attended because of the high prices that people were giving away tickets on the street just to save face. The regular season game against Miami in December was announced as a sellout but was not a packed house either.

The Buffalo Bills continue to have the lowest priced tickets in the NFL, with an average of $51 and have already stated that prices will freeze for the 2009 season. Rogers Communications Inc. hold the rights to the Toronto games until 2012 and will likely have to keep prices at par with the Buffalo prices if they want the games to be a success.

Cleveland Has Trade Deals in Place for Edwards and Quinn

The Cleveland Browns have made it clear that anybody on their roster could be had via trade for the right price, except maybe LT Joe Thomas and LB D'Qwell Jackson. Pro Bowl TE Kellen Winslow has already been traded out of town to Tampa Bay and it appears as if some of his teammates may be out of town as well.

Former Browns personnel chief Mike Lombardi writes that the Browns have in place first-round offers for both quarterback Brady Quinn and receiver Braylon Edwards.

It is likely that the Browns will wait until draft day to finalize the deals, depending on how the draft shakes out. Pulling the trigger on a trade if a player they covet slips into the range of their prospective new picks.

One player the Browns hope will slip to them at number 5 is Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, whom, according to Lombardi, the Browns are in love with.

It was reported yesterday that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed free agent QB Byron Leftwich to a two-year deal.

ESPN's John Clayton has confirmed the deal and the financial's. According to Clayton it is a two-year deal worth $7.5 Million. Leftwich will be scheduled to make $2 million this year. He will have a $3.5 million roster bonus in 2010 that has to be paid at the start of the free-agency period. If they pay it, the quarterback could make $5.5 million in 2010.

The total value of Leftwich's contract is identical to the contract signed earlier in the offseason by projected starter Luke McCown, but McCown will be paid more in the first season on the deal. McCown will earn $5 million this year, via a $2.5 million signing bonus and a $2.5 million base salary.

Falcons Seriously Interested in TE Gonzalez

Michael Lombardi from the National Football Post is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons are seriously considering a trade for Chiefs Pro-Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez, and have offered up a 2nd round pick (#55 overall) to secure his services.

The Chiefs were close to moving Gonzalez last season right at the trade deadline to the New York Giants, but got cold feet at the last minute and called off the deal. Gonzalez is going into his 13th season in the NFL and wants to play for a contender and realizes that the Chiefs are a few years away from that, a few years he may not have left.

The move makes sense as Justin Peelle, the Falcons top tight end target from 2008, caught only 15 passes for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns in 16 games last season.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez is coming off another Pro Bowl season in which he hauled in 96 receptions for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The 49ers have already hosted Georgia QB Matt Stafford last month and it resulted in a mini-feud,when the quarterback felt the 49ers officials went over the line with the line of questions. Stafford told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that he was asked about his parents’ divorce during an interview with a 49ers team psychologist during the NFL Scouting Combine and was told he “sounded if he might have unfinished business.”

NFL.com’s Gil Brandt reports that the 49ers will host the Georgia prospect again on Monday for a visit. Stafford is widely believed to be the favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft on April 25, while San Francisco owns the No. 10 overall selection.

According to NBC Bay Area, 49ers coach Mike Singletary fueled the controversy last month after comments with Ralph Barbieri on KNBR, a local radio station.

“If you’re going to look at drafting a guy in the first round,” Singletary says in the interview, “and you’re going to pay him millions of dollars, and asking him about a divorce about his parents, if that’s going to be an issue, then you know what, maybe he doesn’t belong here.”

The team's comments on the player make it obvious that he is not on their draft board, but need to bring in the Junior quarterback, this time to apologize, or at least make it look like they will to the public.

Reeves: Coaches Don't Punch a Clock

It seemed like the perfect way for him to finally get back into the league, the deal was almost completed, but in the end things didn’t work out for Reeves.

It all boils down to a contractual technicality, which blew up a multiyear deal that appeared to be in place for the 65-year-old former Cowboys running back/assistant coach to become a consultant for his old team.

The bug-a-boo for Reeves, was a piece of "hours spent working" language that owner Jerry Jones wanted to have in the contract.

"Although I respected Jerry’s decision, I didn’t understand it, and it wasn’t something that was even negotiable," Reeves recalled from his home in Atlanta. "I just couldn’t sign something that, in my opinion, would mean I’d be working day-to-day."

Reeves had another offer on the table, to be the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, but had to turn it down because he was so sure he had a better deal in Dallas. A job which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn't want to complete until after the Super Bowl.

It was during that delay that Jones included the "punch clock" clause which to him was essential to the deal.

In Reeves' view, coaches "never punch a clock", so why should he?

Culpepper Lean and Mean as Team Prepares for Mini-Camp

The Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper has heard the rumors about his team potentially drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick. It doesn't phase him and he has already has made a statement during the team’s voluntary workout program, according to Mlive.com.

Culpepper, who weighed 292 pounds when he was signed in the middle of last season, has dropped more than 30 pounds,

“He came in this year about 260 (pounds), so he’s definitely getting himself in shape and he’s just very upbeat and positive. He’s a veteran guy who brings that veteran leadership, and it’s very noticeable out there,” said Lions WR Bryant Johnson, a free agent signed in the offseason.

“He looks good, and I look forward to working with him.”

Culpepper is preparing himself to be the starter, no matter who he needs to beat out in training camp.

"I've only been here about three days, but the biggest thing I can say is that he's leading by example. The guy looks amazing," recently re-signed George Foster said. "He looks like he's coming out of college, and that takes dedication in itself. He's been working and he made an impression on me. He means business."

Bucs Sign Leftwich to 2-Year Deal.

Earlier in the week the Pittsburgh Steelers offered him a two-year contract, but free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich has decided to take the two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers instead.

The Washington Redskins were also interested in Leftwich, who joins a depth chart in Tampa that includes Luke McCown, Josh Johnson, and Brian Griese.

Leftwich, 29, a first-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Marshall in 2003, was a back-up last season in Pittsburgh where he threw for 303lbs and 2 TD's in five apearances, he also won a Super Bowl ring last season.

The former Marshall QB is probably best remembered for a gutsy performance in college when he was carried down the field by his offensive line because he finished the game on a broken leg.

Scott Pioli Loves Old Linebackers, Signs Zach Thomas

Scott Pioli is bringing a little bit of that New England flavor to Kansas City, it started with the trade that netted him Mike Vrabel, and now he has signed another older LB in Zach Thomas. Terms of the contract were not revealed.

Thomas turns 36 in September, but he has made seven trips to the Pro Bowl in his 13 NFL seasons. His most recent Pro Bowl season came in 2006 with Miami, but Thomas started 14 games last year in his first season with Dallas.

A former fifth-round pick by Miami out of Texas Tech in 1996, Thomas immediately became a starter for the Dolphins. He has been extremely durable, missing only 24 games in his career because of injury, the only exception being 2007 when Thomas played only 5 games and ended the season on IR due to reoccuring migraines.

According to NFL.com, Thomas has 1,076 career tackles to go along with 20.5 sacks and 17 Ints, 4 of which he returned for TD's.

NFL Expands Number of Draftee Invites

Each year the NFL invites a number of potential 1st round draftees to Radio City Music Hall as guests of the league. In most years six are invited but this year, there will be as many as ten. League officials decided to expand the list to include players who have compelling stories, even if they are not necessarily top 10 selections.

USC linebacker Brian Cushing, QB's Matthew Stafford of Georgia and Josh Freeman of Kansas State, are among the players who have accepted invitations to attend the draft.

Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe, Ole Miss offensive tackle Michael Oher, Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo and Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith are also expected in New York.

Brian Cushing's teammate QB Mark Sanchez also received an invitation to attend, but respectfully declined because he has planned to remain in California with his family.

Bills Whitner Arrested

It appears as the the Buffalo Bills are attempting to be the Cincinnati Bengals of New York as another one of their players was arrested.

Police have confirmed that Whitner was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting police outside the House of Blues at 3 a.m. He hasn't been officially charged with either crime, according to WIVB-TV in Buffalo.

Whitner, who went to Ohio State, has started 42 games in three seasons since the Bills selected him with the eighth overall pick of the 2006 draft. He had 61 tackles and one sack in 13 games during the 2008 season.

The Bills will already be without starting running back Marshawn Lynch for the first three games of the season and will now await word on whether Whitner will face suspension as well.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates is up for a contract renewal soon and when he heard the news about Buccaneers TE Kellen Winslow Jr.'s deal he must have been smiling from ear to ear. Winslow's 6-year $36 Million deal with $20.1 Million guaranteed is the richest contract for a tight end, and Winslows numbers aren't even close to the stats put up by Gates.

Gates has said that he doesn't want to rob the Chargers, and that it is important that he remain in San Diego, but Gates' agent Tom Condon, who also represents Ladainian Tomlinson, won't let his client sign a sub-par contract and he isn't know for giving any team a break.

"I've been a San Diegan for six years now, and I no longer bleed red," Gates said. "I bleed powder blue. So any time you talk about something that's sincere to your heart, any time your soul gets involved in a situation, you know you don't want to leave it. I want to be here. I want to be a part of this. That's my stance."

The last time these parties locked horns it was contentious. Gates had to sit out the 2005 opener, a Chargers loss; they missed the playoffs by one game that year, on his way to getting his six-year, $22 million deal.

"It was complicated then, and hopefully it won't be in the future," Gates said. Gates had since switched agents, but the one representing him now, the aformentioned Condon, is among the toughest in the business.

Jon Gruden was Offered Another College Gig

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Jon Gruden was suddenly fired last December, sending a shock through the NFL, it apparently also opened up the eyes and cheque books of a few college teams.

Last month Jon Gruden seriously considered becoming the next head coach of Central State (Ohio) University, but eventually turned it down. As Gruden continues to tour the country, talking X's and O's with college coaches trying to learn more about the Spread Offense, which he says he wants to bring into the NFL.

One such meeting was with Oregon's New head coach Chip Kelly, who offered Gruden a spot on his staff as Offensive Coordinator. Gruden ultimately turned down the offer, so we can assume he will not be coaching in 2009, but when he coaches again in 2010 it is anybody's guess if it will be in the pros or in college.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be on the verge of crossing off the first item on their offseason to-do list. Locking up the man responsible for the longest play in Super Bowl history, former undrafted free agent OLB James Harrison

The Steelers and James Harrison are "very close" to reaching an agreement on a long-term contract, the All-Pro outside linebacker's agent said Friday.

Harrison, easily the biggest bargain in the NFL last season was the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is going into the final year of a contract that will pay him $1.2 million in 2009. His agent, Bill Parise, and the Steelers have engaged in contract talks since February, and the sides have apparently made a breakthrough.

Harrison turns 31 at the beginning of May. Steelers Director of football operations Kevin Colbert, however, has said the Steelers don't have any concerns about signing Harrison to a long-term contract since the 6-foot, 242-pounder has only started for two seasons and doesn't have as much wear and tear as other players his age.

Bucs LT Puts Penn to Tender Offer

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers LT Donald Penn had until April 17th to sign the offer tendered to him before free agency began. The restricted free agent was tendered at the highest level by general manager Mark Dominik, and the Bucs would receive a 1st and 3rd round choices is Penn signed with another squad.

Penn was hoping for a long term deal, like the one his teammate TE Kellen Winslow recently signed, but will have to settle for the one-year $2.8 Million deal.

Penn, 25, originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with Minnesota. He has started 26 of the 32 games he's played in for the Buccaneers since the team acquired him as a free agent in 2006. That includes the 16 games he started at left tackle in 2008.

The two sides are expected to continue to work on a long-term deal for Penn, which would be the ideal scenario for the former Utah State product.

Bills Shopping Roscoe Parrish

The Buffalo Bills suddenly find themselves with a plethora of talent at the wide receiver position, and have decided to shop one of their young up and coming receivers. Roscoe Parrish, a Bills second round pick in 2005, is primarily a slot receiver and return man.

The Bills have not set an asking price for Parrish and are just testing the market right now, but it appears as though Parrish is on the block.

At 5'9" 171lbs Parrish is small in stature, but the former Miami Hurricane is elusive in the open field. He finds himself on the depth chart with no. 1 receiver Lee Evans and the recently aquired Terrell Owens, veteran slot receiver Josh Reed and second year man James Hardy.

Not So Comcastic: TV Provider to Bounce NFL Network

The long-running feud between the NFL Network and Comcast is about to come to an end, and subscribers will be the ones to lose this one. On April 30th, the end of the current contract, Comcast will no longer broadcast the NFL Network.

At the core of the increasingly contentious stalemate: Comcast does not carry the NFL Network as part of its basic package, charging a monthly premium to access the channel as part of its digital sports tier.

Comcast wishes to continue the agreement under the same terms. The NFL Network, however, will not agree to a contract that would keep the network on the sports tier.

"We have offered to carry the network under the agreement's current terms, but the NFL has not accepted the offer," said Comcast spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice. "We believe an extension of the current agreement is in the best interest of NFL fans so that they will have the same access they presently enjoy."

The NFL Network wants to become part of the basic digital package, which reaches a significantly larger viewership and would generate more revenue for the NFL. Comcast has approximately 2 million sports tier customers. The company reaches an estimated 40 million homes via cable and satellite television.

Bills Sign Free Agent McKinney

The Buffalo Bills filled a glaring need for depth on the offensive line by signing seven-year veteran Seth McKinney, a free-agent from the Cleveland Browns. Terms of the contract were no revealed but it is believed to be a one-year deal.

McKinney, a 6-foot-3, 310-pounder, was an important and versitile member of the Browns' line last year, filling the No. 1 backup job at both guard spots and the center position. He started three games at guard last year and the first eight games of the 2007 season at guard. His sat out the second half of the '07 season with a shoulder injury.

McKinney is a product of Texas A&M, where he was a four-year starting center. He was a third-round pick of Miami in 2002. He started at center for the Dolphins in 16 games in 2004 and 13 games in 2005. He was born in Buffalo, Texas. He has a brother, Steve, who is an 11-year veteran offensive lineman for Seattle.

Broncos 50th Anniversary Logo Revealed

According to the Denver Business Journal, the company Adrenalin Inc., a local design firm, has been commisioned to design an official logo for the Denver Broncos to commemorate the NFL team’s 50th anniversary.

The football-shaped design will be used by the team and the NFL on their uniforms, signs and programs to honor the American Football League which began in 1960, and was eventually absorbed by the NFL in 1969.

The Denver Broncos along with Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, New York Titans, Houston Oilers, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, comprised the original eight teams of the AFL.

Byron Leftwich Visiting Bucs

Free Agent quarterback Byron Leftwich began his career in Florida and now he might get his shot to return. Leftwich is visiting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Buccaneers have said publicly that they would like to bring four QB's to training camp. Luke McCown appears to be the front runner to be QB1 in Tampa, while second-year man Josh Johnson and journeyman Brian Griese prepare for the back-up battle.

The Steelers have told Leftwich, an unrestricted free agent, they would like to have him back, but have been dragging their feet on his resigning. Leftwich has basically seen no interest on the free agent market other than a visit with the Washington Redskins last week.

Bucs Owner Faces Monster Debt with Man U Franchise

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Owner Malcolm Glazer also owns one of England's most well known and successful soccer franchises Manchester United. The ownership of the two clubs may be wearing him a little too thin.

Manchester United's parent company posted a pretax loss of $65.9 million last season despite an improved operating profit by the club after winning both the Premier and Champions League.

Figures released on Thursday by Companies House showed that United's operating profit went up by $7.35 million to $118.3 million in the fiscal year ending June 2008. The results revealed increased TV revenues and bonuses from title successes, confirming that the club maintains a strong marketing brand around the world.

But the continued debt repayments by Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer, who took out a loan to buy the club in 2005, meant the balance sheet showed another loss.

Many have speculated that the Man U debt was the reason the Buccaneers have been so frugal the last few seasons, the Bucs entered free agency a reported $62 Million under the salary cap and may be at risk of not meeting the salary floor, which is 70% of the salary cap. Despite constant denial of this, the debt figures appear to confirm the speculation.

Rams Staying Home for Training Camp

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo would prefer to hold training camp an hour to 90 minutes outside of St. Louis, and who can blame him? It's the only way he has ever done it. That's the approach taken by both the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants when Spagnuolo worked with Andy Reid and Tom Coughlin. But other issues to deal with this offseason, coupled with not enough time to fully research potential training camp sites, have prompted Spagnuolo and the Rams to stay home in 2009.

So, for the fourth time in the past five years, the Rams will hold training camp at their year-round office and practice facility at Rams Park in Earth City.

"In the end, we just felt that this was the most practical option for 2009, from a football standpoint and also from a fan standpoint," said Kevin Demoff, the Rams' executive vice president of football operations.

In an attempt to find an alternative location, the Rams looked at Lindenwood University, just across the Missouri River from Rams Park in St. Charles. They also considered Southern Illinois University Carbondale and SIU-Edwardsville.

"Nobody had ever really taken the time to research local options, at least not in the past few years," Demoff said. "It's possible in 2010 we could go elsewhere. But in the end, all of our research this year led us to want to stay here."

A promising option for 2010 is SIUC ,which is in the midst of an $83 million athletic facilities project that includes a new football stadium, a new athletic support building and renovations to the basketball arena. By 2010, SIUC would have the new stadium and four football fields available for use by the Rams. "All within 200 yards of each other," said SIUC athletics director Mario Moccia

Demoff has put together a team that will continue to research possible camp sites over the next years, including assistant to the head coach-football operations Bruce Warwick and vice president of operations John Oswald.

"By the time we started seeking out schools (this year), it was a little late in the process for them to be able to commit to a month," Demoff said. "... This will give everybody lead time of a year to really give us a proposal that makes sense. And for us to consider what makes sense."

Familliar Faces Back in Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens brought back a pair of familiar faces Tuesday, re-signing cornerback Samari Rolle and backup quarterback Todd Bouman. Rolle signed a four-year contract. Bouman's deal was for one year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rolle was released last month, but it was made clear that the possibility of him returning to the Ravens.

"Samari is a proven, quality veteran corner," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said. "Even more than that, he is a quality person. We upgraded our football team."

Rolle, 32, spent the last four seasons with Baltimore, starting 47 games despite injuries and illness. An 11-year veteran, Rolle played in just six games in 2007 due to an adverse reaction to epilepsy medication. He also was limited to 10 games last season because of neck and shoulder injuries.

Bouman spent last season with Baltimore as a backup to rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. He has started six of 42 career games, completing 129-of-230 passes for 1,683 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Bills Lynch Suspended 3 Games

Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to suspend Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch for the first three games of the 2009 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, according to sources. An official announcement is likely coming on Thursday

Lynch is expected to appeal the suspension, which will lose, the Bills back approximately $112,000 of his $635,000 base salary for 2009 during the suspension.

The Bills running back was arrested on a misdemeanor gun charge. In searching a parked car carrying Lynch, Culver City police found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun inside a backpack in the trunk.

After pleading guilty to having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, Lynch was sentenced last month to 80 hours of community service and three years' probation.

This is the second violation for Lynch in as many years, when he pleaded guilty to a traffic violation and admitted driving off after striking a female pedestrian with his car. He avoided suspension the first time after meeting with Commisioner Goodell at training camp last summer. No such luck this time.

Pace Wants a Reunion with Holt

The Chicago Bears are in need of wide receiver, that is not secret, new quarterback Jay Cutler has already reached out to Plaxico Burress, and now another new Chicago Bear is lobbying for a familliar free agent.

Bears LT Orlando Pace, who was recently signed to solidify the offensive line in the windy city, want to bring an old buddy along with him to spice up the offense, former Rams WR Torry Holt.

“I spoke to Torry,” Pace said. “It’s funny he was just probably at my house a few days before I even came here. I think he’s just out searching. I’m probably recruiting him in Chicago here. And hopefully it works out.”

The 32-year old WR would bring playmaking ability to Chicago as well as an experienced mentor to Chicago's young receiving core along with his 12,660 yards and 74 TD's

Lovie Smith, is also familiar with Holt, as he served as the Rams defensive coordinator from 2001 through 2003.

Cutler Reaches Out to Burress

The Chicago Bears got themselves a shiny new quarterback, a real gunslinger in Jay Cutler, and if Cutler has his way he will be throwing passes to a differnt kind of gunslinger in the near future.

According to WSCR radio, via the Chicago Tribune, new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has reached out to free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress about joining the team.

When Bears head coach Lovie Smith was asked about potentially adding Burress, the coach responded.

"Every player that's available, we look into," Smith said.

Bengals CB Leon Hall Busted for DUI

They are at it again, the Cincinnati Bengals player have a long history with breaking the law and it appears that cornerback Leon Hall didn't want to be left behind.

Leon Hall was stopped Sunday at 3:11 a.m. on Mount Carmel-Tobasco Road in Union Township.
The Ohio State Patrol said Hall's blood-alcohol level was .149, nearly twice the legal limit. Hall was charged with driving under the influence and driving left of center.

The arresting officer said Hall was polite and cooperative during the arrest. Hall was scheduled to appear Friday in court in Clermont County.

The 24-year-old Hall played college football at Michigan and has played in 32 games as a Bengal, compiling 143 tackles and eight interceptions.

Peterson Still Pushing Weight Gain

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson wants to bulk up this off-season to help with the wear and tear of the NFL's rugged regular season. He first mentioned the idea at the pro-bowl, and the idea was met with hesitance from the team.

Three months later and Peterson is still intent on packing on weight, he plans to play at somewhere between 225 and 230lbs. Currently at 217lbs this may be a significant weight gain for a player who relies on speed. He plans test out his theory at training camp.

"Just to see how I feel," Peterson said. "Before the season starts, I look forward to having my weight up so I'll be able to see how it is when I run and cut and do things like that."

Peterson said he doesn't believe extra pounds will hamper his speed and agility, but Vikings coach Brad Childress isn't so sure.

"Well, you know what? 230 is awful big," Childress said Wednesday. "From 17 to 30, just put a 10-pound sack of potatoes on your back and think of how that works for you."
